Jennifer Lawrence: Flipping The Bird After Oscar Win Was Not Cool

Mon, February 25, 2013 1:47pm EDT by 82 Comments 25,399 Article Views

Jennifer Lawrence, you just experienced a publicly epic moment — the likes of which most people won’t EVER have in a lifetime. You had no business giving the finger in the Oscar’s pressroom!

Jennifer Lawrence, you had just won the 2013 Best Actress Oscar for your role in Silver Linings Playbook when you went backstage into the press room and flipped the bird at the gathered throngs.

Maybe Jennifer, you thought it was funny to give the finger to the professional journalists during their job at the Oscars.

Maybe, you thought that flipping the bird was an irreverent move to pull, and part of a “wild child” persona you’re trying to cultivate… because maybe you think, your image is too ‘normal’.

Or maybe Jennifer, you were simply so emotionally overwhelmed by winning the ultra prestigious award at the young age of 22, that you just got carried away by being silly.

Jennifer Lawrence: addled By Her Fall?

You did after all, trip on your stunning Dior ball gown on the way up to the Oscars podium, and that could have shaken up your equilibrium.

Most people — Oscar winning stars and all of us ordinary folks, would be mortified to fall on the stairs on the way up to receive an award. So, the fact that you handled the stumble with grace and a stellar acceptance speech may have left you feeling like you needed to blow off your case of nerves… with a bird flip.

Ok, so there — I’ve laid out all the reasonable explanations you could have for making such a rude and unappreciative gesture.

But, they are all just excuses. In reality, there’s not acceptable reason for such uncalled for behavior. Especially after just getting a one in seven billion accolade.

Jennifer Lawrence, you are THE luckiest girl in the world! Born gorgeous. Born with acting talent that got you cast in Silver Linings Playbook and the enormously popular and successful Hunger Games franchise.

That means you are becoming rich beyond your wildest dreams at 22 and will NEVER have to worry about the everyday huge anxieties that most young women have today like how to pay off crushing student loans and get a decent job!

Are you letting the rarified air of Hollywood addle your brain?

You aren’t ‘entitled’ as a movie star to be disrespectful to the press, who have helped make you a star.

It’s Not The First Time JLaw Has Shocked With A Rude Comment

Jennifer, you’ve also made a few unthoughtful statements before.

When you won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, also for Silver Linings, you exclaimed: “What does it say? I beat Meryl!”

That would be the legendary Meryl Streep — who has been nominated for an Oscar 17 times and won three times.

Even Lindsay Lohan was taken aback by your Meryl mention and tweeted: “And no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep.”

Jennifer, you have to take note, when even Hollywood’s most notorious wild child, Lindsay, calls you out for being disrespectful.

A little sensitivity, Jennifer, would also have kept you out of PETA‘s hot water last year. “Screw PETA,” you told Rolling Stone, when the animal rights organization protested after you discussed your squirrel-skinning scene in 2010′s Winter’s Bone film.

How You Can Still Be A Rebel… Without Being Rude

It seems, Jennifer, that you like to look like a lady — you always do at award shows, but then you try to behave like a rebel.

Well there’s a little difference between rebellious and rudeness.

If you want to be rebellious, pick a worthy cause that you believe in and be deeply and forthrightly involved.

But don’t spend an iota of any more energy being ungracious to people doing their job who are paid a zillionth less than you and you don’t get to wear fabulous designer dresses or go to the world’s most exclusive parties.

You’re a role model- whether you like it or not- for millions of young women and staying humble, and down-to-Earth and taking the classy high road will take you very far in life. You don’t need to be the nest churlish paparazzi-fighting Sean Penn.

Don’t forget — you are just 22. Yes, you’re already on top but good manners will help you stay there. Everyone appreciates them.

If so, keep your flipping the bird fingers to yourself!

Right now you are being disrespectful! There’s a lot of hate in this article. Get a life or something. P.S. I hate Justin Bieber and Kristen Stewart but I don’t post “disrespectful” stuff about them. Have some decency.

In case you haven’t noticed by reading this site – Bonnie LOVES Kristen Stewart and puts down Jennifer Lawrence at every turn. Guess KS brings in the most comments. Better get used to JL Hollywoodlife – she’s going to be around for a long time.

I heard that the reason she flipped the bird was because one of the people in the press made a rude comment about her falling when going to get her award. He said something like “watch your step next time” and If that was the case i think jennifer had every right to flip the bird. On the other hand I have also heard it was a joke between her and her crew…

Lindsay Lohan worked with Meryl Streep. She has every right to say what she did.

The quote was from a movie, First Wives Club. Sure, Lindsey had “the right” to say it, doesn’t mean she was correct.

However wrote this is an idiot. When she said, “What does it say? I beat Meryl!” It’s from a movie that she was quoting and anyone stupid enough to listen to Lindsey Lohan who can’t manage to keep it together long enough to make it out a court room truely deserves an idiot award. You don’t like her than thats fine but maybe people should keep their traps shut until they have all the facts. I would also like to add that the author of this article has probably lost millions of readers due to her idiocy, I know I won’t be on this website ever again. If I could I would give you the middle finger.

Umm Bonnie by any chance did you see Jennifer lawrence’s face after she did the finger? She said sorry a billion times come on do your research! Oh and when she said “I beat Meryll!” it was a quote from a movie. She didn’t mean it! And Lindsey LOhan is a messed up psycho who believes/even cares what she says?

OH dear Bonnie!! You have failed at your only job of doing research! Tis tis! You should really think twice before writing a long, cruel and ignorant piece like this one. She “flipped off” a reporter who yelled “watch your step” when she entered the room. The “I Beat Meryl” comment was from the movie First Wives Club.

I hope this Bonnie is not going to be writing any more stories for this web site or any where! She clearly is not a great writer and fails to research anything. So sad, there are much better writers out there…

Bonnie Fuller you dumb c**t.

I saw the interview patter on a video clip. The give-and-take between JLawrence and the press. They were not being kind. In fact, I was taken aback at the severe lack of courtesy they demonstrated. Jennifer’s one-fingered gesture to the press corps was provoked. I’d have done the same. So kindly wipe off the smug off your face and report the truth.

You’re making a mountain out of a molehill several times over with this middle finger business and the subsequent examples you cite of her rudeness. Give me a break. It’s easy to take a photo and take it out of context. What was said/what occurred leading up to her flipping the bird? That wasn’t detailed in this poorly written article and it’s a little presumptuous to say she was just flat out being rude and given the fact that she just had won so prestigious an award, she should be more respectful of the media. I agree that the media can benefit a career, but she won her award based on her performance in a film, not because she gave the best interview. I didn’t see her give anyone the finger on TV to know what happened and given her personality, I will give her the benefit of the doubt that there was a humorous back and forth going on between her and the press and until you or someone else provides video proof of her acting disrespectfully, I will chalk this up to being another overreaction by the media. Have a sense of humor.

As for the Meryl Streep remark, has no one seen “First Wives Club”? She was quoting the scene in the film where Bette Midler was holding up an award won by the actress Goldie Hawn was portraying in the film. I don’t think it was that outlandish for her to think that despite it being a lesser known film by some today, that her peers would have gotten the reference. And even if she wasn’t quoting an actual line from a movie, it was said in jest. Get over it. Lindsay Lohan is trying to stay relevant and come to the defense of someone neither being mocked nor in need of defense if she were. Meryl Streep probably got a chuckle out of it. It’s a joke. Lindsay Lohan is such a great example too. She just destroyed an over $10,000 dress by partying, tearing it allegedly, then shearing it in half with scissors. A dress that was lent to her by Phillip Bloch after Charlie Sheen reached out to him.

And as for the Peta remark, she’s allowed to have her opinions. Not everyone is a fan of Peta. Peta, if you do some research at all, isn’t purely just an animal rights organization. I won’t get into it because it’s not my point in posting here, if anyone wants to learn more about Peta they can research the organization for themselves. She played a character living in abject poverty in the mountains, a young girl trying to take care of her family, and it was important to the character development. I’ll respect Peta when they stop encouraging and applauding their members for throwing paint or flour on people. J

ennifer Lawrence is 22 and a human being, she’s not a robot. She isn’t going to be politically correct every second, and I find it refreshing that she’s candid and real in her statements. If you don’t like her fine, but just because she’s had success recently and she’s beautiful doesn’t mean she has no right to be a human and have opinions. Look at Anne Hathaway. Poor woman was ridiculed for being too earnest and sweet. There’s no winning. I respect people who are themselves, whatever comes out of their mouths for the most part. I think this is just nitpicking to label her as rude and a waste of an article.

You did your research, Gwen! Bonnie, please learn to use Google properly

Not to pick nits, but PETA did not raise a ruckus about Lawrence skinning a squirrel. Mr Redford is too important, to be insulted by PETA publicity seekers, for them to mock or shock anyone at Sundance. Besides, it’s damned cold in Park City during Sundance, and walking naked in the streets to protest the wearing of fur, could lead to frostbite.

The actual quote that Bonnie lmisrepresented, was this: Jen Lawrence was giving an interview and simply made a wisecrack. “…I’m supposed to say it wasn’t a real squirrel [because of PETA], but screw PETA”.

Which is precsely what every meat-eating person has wanted to tell PETA for a very long time. And, in point of fact, it’s PETA who are playing the cowards here. Nobody protests The Hunger Games’ depiction of Katniss as a bow hunter who ffeeds starving humans in a futuristic concentration camp. Perhaps that’s because PETA types realize that to protest feeding the intentionally-starved with meat, would open them to ridicule.

Jen has my thanks, for takinng the roles of Katniss and Tiffany and Ree and performing memorably in them.

Gern, thank you for a well-written post.

Bonnie, thank you for allowing us to respond. Now please learn how to do your research on Google. A bit of fact checking would have made your bird-flipping post more on-point, and you’d appear smarter than me.

Couldn’t agree more!!!! If the biggest thing she does is throw out a hilarious (and necessary due to the rude comments) hand gesture, then I would say she’s awesome. Journalists have to hunt to find something wrong with her, because you won’t see her stumbling out of clubs at 3 in the morning or smoking weed with friends.

Wow Bonnie Fuller, get off your high horse, it’s no big deal. Honesly were you raised by nuns or what? And “the professional journalists”, really? Girl, they cover the Oscars, not the war in Iraq. They’re only here to talk about things like who got the most expensive dress and the most boring acceptance speech. At least she is not a cockhead like Lohan or a ninnie like Taylor Swift. Grow up and stop being such a cry baby.

Wow Somebody obviously doesn’t have a sense of humor, and has never seen “First Wives Club” either. “I beat Meryl” is a line from that movie. Yeah maybe you should do a little bit more research before you side with crackhead Lindsey Lohan and write an article that is just blatantly misinformed. It’s not cool and it makes you look extremely ignorant for writing about a subject you obviously know nothing about. I didn’t even watch the Oscars and I know more about this than you do. All I have to say is “Boo you whore” (before you get all indignant that’s a quote from a movie as well, but you’ll probably have to call your pal Lindsey to figure out what movie it’s from.) Oh and BTW She didn’t give the finger in the news room. It happened in the hallway and was a joking reaction to a journalist who teased her by asking her if she needed any help making it up the steps to the press room. Don’t you even watch celebrity news?

I don’t care about the exact location of the “giving the finger” episode – it was very rude and made her appear brash and ungrateful. There was no need to mention the quote about Merle either, in any context. Watching her at the table with Brad Cooper it almost appeared as though he really didn’t like her very much. Did anyone else get that impression? I may be reading more into his expressions than was warranted. Apologies if I misunderstood. People have remarked to me that Kristen Stewart seemed angry or sad. I thought she looked as if she wasn’t feeling too good. Funny how people differ in their impressions of others, isn’t it?
