The Olympic sprinter was formally charged in a South African court on Feb. 15 for the shooting death of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Oscar sobbed in court — and the prosecution is calling the murder premeditated.
Just a day after allegedly shooting his girlfriend, double-amputee Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, 26, faced a South African court on Feb. 15 for a single murder charge in the death of Reeva Steenkamp, 30. During his appearance, Oscar buried his face in his hands and broke down in tears. Both the prosecution and the defense asked the magistrate Desmond Nair to postpone the bail hearing, which is now scheduled for Feb. 19. While Oscar didn’t enter a plea or talk during the court appearance, prosecutor Gerrie Nel said they will be seeking to charge the Olympian with “premeditated murder.” He will stay in jail until the bond hearing on Feb. 19.
Oscar Pistorius’ Valentine’s Day Shooting
Early in the morning of Feb. 14, Oscar allegedly shot his girlfriend four times — twice in the head and twice in the body — killing her. Although some reports claim Oscar thought Reeva was an intruder, police are not pursing that as a motive.
Oscar Pistorius’ Domestic Violence Past
Prosecutors allege that Oscar had a domestic violence past, and witnesses report hearing shouting from his house the night of Reeva’s murder. In 2009, Oscar was arrested and spent a night in jail for allegedly physically assaulting a 19-year-old girl who was attending a party at his house. When she was asked to leave the party, she refused — and Oscar slammed the door on the girl and bruising and hurting her leg. Oscar was at first charged with assault with intent to cause bodily harm, but a day later was reduced to common assault. The charges were later dropped.
