The champion snowmobiler succumbed to his injuries on Jan. 31, following a dangerous crash at the 2013 Winter X Games where his 450-pound snowmobile landed on top of him. Such a tragedy.
Caleb Moore, 25, passed away on Jan. 31, according to a CNN. He was hospitalized after being involved in a dangerous snowmobile accident at the Winter X Games on Jan. 24, when he attempted a backflip and his machine landed on top of him. So sad.
“He will be truly missed and never forgotten,” his family told CNN in a statement. “The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for all the prayers and support they have received from all the fans, friends and family around the world that Caleb has inspired.”
The champion snowmobiler was competing in the Snowmobile Freestyle finals on Jan. 24 when he attempted the backflip. Frighteningly, he came up short on the trick, causing the skis on his sled to slam into the landing, flipping the snowmobile end-over-end. Caleb flipped over the handlebars, and the 450-pound machine landed on top of him.
After laying on the ground for a few minutes, he eventually got up and was escorted off the course — but was quickly rushed to Aspen Valley Hospital with a concussion. He was later flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. where he underwent emergency heart surgery on Jan. 25. Following the surgery, he remained in critical condition for severe brain and heart trauma.
His family hadn’t expected him to survive the horrific accident. “Caleb is not doing good at all,” Charles Moore, Caleb’s grandfather, told The Denver Post. “The prognosis is not good at all. It’s almost certain he’s not going to make it.”
The Moore family also released a statement on Jan. 29.
“Caleb is in critical condition and is being closely monitored,” the Moore family said in a statement to ABC News through their spokesperson Chelsea Lawson. “The Moores want to express their gratitude to all of Caleb’s fans, friends and family for their strong support and ask for continued prayers in the coming days.”
Our thoughts remain with Caleb’s family, friends, and fans during this tragic time.
