San Antonio, Texas and Long Beach, California auditions brought some of the most emotional appearances to date — the judges even gave a contestant a standing ovation! Keep reading for the full recap!
American Idol can usually be counted on for drama between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, but on the Jan. 30 episode, heartwarming stories trumped fighting. Read on to see who had the judges in tears and which contestant got a standing ovation!
The Easiest ‘Yes’ Votes Of The Night
Micah Johnson had his abnormally large tonsils removed, only to have doctors hit a nerve in his throat. He now has a speech impediment and goes to speech therapy. This mistake happens to about 1 in every 100,000 people but “why give up,” he said. Soft spoken at first, Micah’s singing voice was so strong, loud and beautiful! Mariah was very “moved by his story and his voice.” Loved him!
Matheus Fernandes, 21, has an undiagnosed condition where he is extremely short. His super emotional and passionate audition left Mariah in tears. Nicki says “we’re looking for a unique and special person and you fit that bill.” “You could sing anything for me any day of the week,” Mariah choked out. Welcome to Hollywood!
Sanni M’Mairura, 16, has incredible star quality and stage presence, plus a voice to boot! He reminded me slightly of Justin Bieber! Randy called him “fresh” – it was a unanimous yes from the judges!
Adam Sanders, 19, had tears flowin’ before he even got in the audition room! He shocked the judges with his super soulful voice while singing an Etta James song. He got a standing ovation from Keith, Mariah and Randy! (Nicki was too busy cuddling her blanket.) Congrats Adam!
Vincent Powell made it to the end of Hollywood week last year. His amazing audition gave him another golden ticket! After his idol Mariah told him, “You sing like an angel. It was fantastic,” he was jumping for joy!
Cristabel Clack, 29, belted out an Alicia Keys tune to the delight of the judges. “I know you. I get you. I love you,” Mariah gushed. Randy concurred: “I love you!”
Ann Difani was nominated by her husband Jordan to audition. A sweet country singer with a true American love story – everybody say “Awww!”
Victoria Acosta sings Mariachi on the river walk to greet tourists in San Antonio. During her audition, Keith said that something was missing from her Fergie song choice and I agree. She connects much more with the music that speaks to her culture!
Briana Oakley, 16, was bullied severely after being on Maury. After her amazing audition, Keith said it was “fantastic. Your tone, your range, it all works.” Nicki added, “This is your moment.” Randy said, “Are you ready?”
David and Derek Bacerott, brothers from San Antonio, butchered “Let Me Love You.” The judges were repeatedly cut off by the contestants who said they wanted the “truth” but were unwilling to accept the fact that they totally sucked.
Stephanie Sanson came out and seemed cute. Then she SCREAMED ADELE and gave the judges the finger. Not cute.
Brian Martinez practiced his horrendous singing in the bathroom. Mariah and her giant boobs said no to young Brian.
The Ugly … Or At Least Questionable
Savannah Votion sang “At Last” and actually sounded amazing. Unfortunately, her outfit was horrible. She wore a black sequin bandeau that exposed her stomach with a red cut-out jacket and studded jeans. WHY?! Other than that, I loved her voice.
Papa Peachez sang an original tune and admitted he is “a big black woman trapped in a little boy body.” Nicki thought he was a “super star,” while Keith said it was too “theatrical.” Mariah said he was quirky while Randy said he needed work on his vocals. After a judges tie, Randy changed his vote to a yes and sent Peachez to Hollywood!
