When Jodie took to the stage to accept her Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes on Jan. 13 she gave a shocking yet beautiful speech about why she felt now was the time to reveal that she is a lesbian. The entire crowd was in tears as Jodie spoke and she begged for her mother to understand her public admission.
Jodie Foster is such an inspiration. The 50-year-old actress told the millions of viewers at home and celebrities in the audience of the 70th annual Golden Globes that yes, she is a lesbian and she’s thrilled to be coming out and not hiding this any longer.
Jodie’s Emotional Golden Globes Speech
“A big coming out speech tonight,” she said. “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age. Back in the days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now apparently every celebrity is expected to expose the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a reality show.”
“I’m sorry, that’s just not me and it never will be. But please support me because my reality show would be so boring. I would have to make out with Marion Cotillard, spank Daniel Craig’s bottom just to stay on the air. But seriously, if you had been a public figure since the time you were a toddler. If you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal, then maybe then too you’d value privacy about all else.”
“Someday in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there since the time that I was three years old and that’s a reality show enough, don’t you think. Love people and stay beside them. There is no way I could stand here tonight without acknowledging one of the greatest loves of my life. My ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard. I am so proud of our modern family.”
Jodie Has Always Been Very Private About Her Personal Life
It was so surprising to hear Jodie talk about this since she has always been very careful to not expose too many details on her life to the public, which everyone always respected!
In 2007 Jodie won an award at a Women in Entertainment breakfast and she thanked “my beautiful Cydney.” She was referring to her long-time film producer partner Cydney Bernard. They met on the set of the film Sommersby in 1993 and together they raised two sons Charles and Kit. She has always refused to comment on being a lesbian until now.
Jodie and Cydney broke up in 2008 and she admitted during her Golden Globes speech that she is single.
We are so proud of Jodie for admitting this and we find her to be a true mentor, inspiration, and role model for everyone.

I didn’t hear her say anything about being gay. Why do you people continue to milk the Gay Lifestyle for all that it’s worth. It’s as if you want to make everyone Gay or suspect. Get over this crap. This is one of my favorite stars and frankly my dear, I don’t give a care who or what she is and I respect her for protecting her private life. What else does any of us have if not our privacy?. Okay?

I have to say that while I like Jodie Foster, I don’t think she or other celebrities need to make a big announcement of their sexual orientation. Maybe they feel that they should because they are public figures, but I don’t think it’s necessary. There are tons of lesbians and gay people in the world; they come out to friends and family and whoever else happens to want or need to know. It happens organically, with context. But they don’t get on a stage and announce it to the world. Nor do heterosexual people announce that they are straight. I think I half suspected that something about her seemed bisexual, at least; it doesn’t matter to me. I actually think her speech is way overly-melodramatic even without the coming out thing.
