During his appearance on ‘Katie,’ the ‘Les Mis’ actor revealed that before he and his wife had their two kids, they suffered several miscarriages — and devastating heartache.
Hugh Jackman is the proud father to Oscar Maximillian, 12, and Ava Eliot, 7, whom he and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness welcomed through adoption. But before they were parents to two happy kids, they struggled with having children — a painful process that Hugh recounted on Katie Couric‘s talk show Katie on Dec. 18.
He and Deborra-Lee fought a long, tough road to have kids, resulting in IVF treatments and miscarriages.
“It is a difficult time. The miscarriage thing — apparently it happens to one in three pregnancies — but it’s very, very rarely talked about,” the actor told Katie.
“It’s almost secretive. But it’s a good thing to talk about. It’s more common and it’s tough, there’s a grieving process you have to go through,” he added.
Though the couple ended up going through with adoption, he reiterated that it was never a “last resort” — it was always in their plans as parents.
“To be clear, Deb and I always wanted to adopt,” he explained. “We didn’t know where in the process that would happen, but biologically, obviously, we tried and it was not happening for us.”
But even throughout all the heartache, the birth of their first child healed all of the past pain they endured.
“The moment Oscar was born all the heartache melted away. You can’t prepare for that moment, nothing can prepare you,” he gushed. “You can’t even explain how incredible it is and that avalanche of emotion that comes. How it opens up your heart, how it frustrates you, how it angers you and … all of a sudden how alive you are.”
We’re so happy everything worked out for Hugh and Deborra — they seem like such strong, loving parents!
