Before anyone learned the results of tonight’s episode of ‘The X Factor,’ the boys of Emblem3 told reporters how they felt their performance was ‘perfect’ this week! Read on for the full interview!
The boys of Emblem3 (Wesley Stromberg, Keaton Stromberg, and Drew Chadwick) sat down with reporters after their performances in the semi-finals of The X Factor on Dec. 12. Fresh off the high of judge Britney Spears telling them they are more than just a boy band, the boys were quite pleased with themselves! Wes even told reporters, “The craziest part is, we said on Monday that this would be our best week, and it was.”
The crooners were happy to have just gotten to be themselves during the semi-finals, with Drew saying, “And I hate to say this, but out of all the weeks, this week we didn’t try. That sounds bad and like we are lazy, but we didn’t try to be anything.” Wes added, “We just said, ‘We are going to be ourselves.’”
Drew continued, “This week we got to be ourselves and do a song we could actually apply to, I got a sick rap that I had to write, we have 3 part harmonies in the chorus.” Wes concurred, “It was all perfect.”

Q: So you guys are compared to the Beatles?
Keaton: I was honestly very nervous going into tonight singing a Beatles song, not about the song choice because we sang and performed it well, the just the fact that…
Wesley: That was a Beatles song.
Drew: If anything we have a lot of expectations to live up to, you can get a lot of heat if you don’t live up to that expectation, so we felt confident with it in rehearsals and obviously Simon [Cowell] wouldn’t let us do it if it wasn’t stellar and up to their expectations. So we felt comfortable with it and aside from all that, being publicly compared to the Beatles has been the biggest honor of my entire life, hands down. It’s literally a dream come true because we never talk about it or whatever say it in public because when you say stuff like that people say, ‘Dude shut up.’ You just never say that. They are a musical phenomenon. You just don’t do that. But to be compared to them not only publicly, but by someone who is one of the most respected people in the industry, that’s huge to hear. It was a dream come true for us. We do want to be like that.
K: I’m probably going to cry like a baby later. When I actually realize what he said.
W: He’ll probably cry in the shower.
Q: Tonight was a milestone of your many levels because Britney also validated the fact you are not just a boy band?
W: More than a boy band!
D: That was cool, too. She validated that to everybody. Obviously you are more than a boy band because realistically we are. But we are also different from the band and are still trying to figure out what we are.
W: We are performers too.
D: So we don’t really know yet. What we do know is that it’s new and it’s going to be awesome and groundbreaking. It’s going to be sick whenever we do get the project going. We want to do amazing things.
Q: The general census among your competitors is that you guys won the night?
W: That’s crazy.
K: Wait, that’s news to us?
D: And I hate to say this, but out of all the weeks, this week we didn’t try. That sounds bad and like we are lazy, but we didn’t try to be anything.
W: We just said we are going to be ourselves.
K: I don’t think we fathomed before that it’s $5 million and we could actually win the whole competition, so we were just trying to…I don’t know were trying to do.
D: This week we got to be ourselves and do a song we could actually apply to, I got a sick rap that I had to write, we have 3 part harmonies in the chorus.
W: It was all perfect.
D: There was no choreography and I could just go in the crowd and wherever I wanted.
K: We pretty much do everything ourselves. Except for the staging for the cameras, we did pretty much all of it.
D: As we’ve seen through past performances, when we try to be something that we are not…
W: It just comes out wrong.
D: You can see that, it’s transparent. When we are able to be ourselves, that’s when the true light shines.
W: The craziest part is we said on Monday that this would be our best week, and it was.
D: And when you say in other weeks before, I would say ‘I’m not too stoked on this week,’ and that’s how it ends up.
W: But when you put your mind to it.
D: The source of thought, the source is what literally manifests physical reality. And it’s in sync. It’s like a science.
Q: Who would you consider your biggest competition at this point?
Drew: Everyone is different in their own way and everyone is different in their unique style. And there’s no comparison, because everybody is phenomenal. Everybody is amazing. It’s like, I can’t compare myself to Carly [Rose Sonenclar] because she’s a way better vocalist than any of us. I mean in some people’s perspective, some people want to be like, ‘Yeah, but she might be better at vocal acrobatics and stuff like that, but I’d rather listen to this raw s**t. Like, something that I can connect to, and feel related to.’ It just depends.
W: We are all different singers. How are we even competing right
now? It’s crazy.
D: We’re something that we don’t even understand yet, but we are
working on something that’s real. That’s all we want to be is
something that’s real.
Q: Could it be that you’re your own biggest competition?
D: You know, we live by the motto –- hakuna matata. [Laughs] We don’t
want to try…we don’t want to try, because we never try. Ever since
the beginning of — I hate to use that word.
W: Don’t say try.
D: When you say that — when you guys write it out in your freaking
thing, it’s going to make me sound like a douchebag. Um…
W: Just find a different word next time. [Laughs]
Q: Is it kind of bittersweet that you guys had this amazing
performance tonight, and then the leaderboard is going to be blacked
out tomorrow? You’re not going to know where you placed.
K: Oh, yeah!
D: Not really, I mean, again — it’s hakunana matata.
K: But they want the finale to be a surprise. That’s crazy.
Q: We don’t know who’s in front tomorrow.
D: Dang…
K: Dang, what if we won?! That would be a bummer.
Q: Well, then you just have to win.
K: Exactly. We will just win the whole thing, and everyone will be
like, wait, what?
Q: Simon insinuated last week that he would sign you regardless of
whether you won or not. Has he already had those conversations with
him?
K: Well, he hasn’t come to us directly, but we definitely saw [that]
interview. And…
D: We saw that, heard that.
K: That’s freaking rad.
W: He always kind of looks at us like, wink, wink, hint, hint. You know?
D: Our first audition, our first live performance he said, ‘You guys
are going.’ [He] just pointed up, and like winked. He said, ‘You guys
are going to the top.’
W: It’s only gotten more like that.
D: At our first audition, he said, ‘I predict big things for you guys
going forward.’
W: That’s true.
D: Simon is on that law of attraction.
Q: Is he down with you guys wanting to do your thing?
W: He really wants us to be us.
D: Yeah.
W: That’s how I feel.
D: In any industry, especially starting out, you have to make
sacrifices, and you have to make compromises.
K: Yeah, there’s got to be a middle ground.
D: You know, honestly, our first album is probably going to be more on
the poppy side. You know, they are not going to do something we hate
because why would they want us running around with terrible attitudes?
And hating what we are doing? You have to do what you love if you want
it to be authentic and real, or else it’s going to be transparent.
K: We just have to find a middle ground. It’s going to work.
D: It’s going to work, and it’s going to be better than we imagined.
Right now, we don’t understand it, but it’s going to be better than that.
Q: With your first song ‘Baby I Love Your Way,’ what were your mom’s thoughts on it?
W: My mom loves that song. She walks up and goes, ‘I told you so.’
K: She’s the one that told us to sing it.
W: She…she will never let that go.
D: She’s, like, walking around here without any shoes on.
W: I’m going to be getting married, and she’s going to be like,’Remember when I told you to sing that song?’
