Breaking the sire bond may cause short-term damage to Damon & Elena as a couple, but I think it’s the only way they can really be happy together down the road.
Let me begin by saying I’m just as supportive of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) relationship as you are — assuming you set sail on on the good ship “Delena,” that is. But after re-watching the Dec. 6 episode of The Vampire Diaries, I believe that not only should Damon break the sire bond, but he kind of needs to break it.
If Damon maintains his sire bond, no matter how much Elena insists that she wants him to, there will always be naysayers like Caroline (Candice Accola) who refuse to believe Elena’s feelings are genuine. Even though Tyler (Michael Trevino) — who’s basically the poster-child for siring in Mystic Falls — said point-blank that “the bond affects how you act, not how you feel,” I doubt everyone else will be easily convinced.
More importantly, Damon won’t be easily convinced. During his final scene with Elena, he said the only thing would make him happy would be knowing that she returned his love for her — and that was after she explained that the bond doesn’t effect emotions. Damon, while beautiful, is also completely unstable.
Besides, this is The Vampire Diaries we’re talking about. Even if Damon does tell Elena to live her life without him, never think of him again, and stop caring about him, do you really think that’ll stick? Remember when Damon confessed his love for Elena in season two, then compelled her to forget? We all thought that would stick, too; but then the writers turned Elena into a vampire and *poof* she remembered.
In summary, before you get yourself all worked up over the implications of breaking the bond, remember this: No couple is worth rooting for without obstacles.
