Australian DJs Suspended Prank Call

Southern Cross Austereo, the company that owns 2Day FM station says that DJ Mel Greig and Michael Christian are ‘deeply saddened’ by the news of Jacintha Saldanha’s death and are taking themselves off the air ‘until further notice.’ Read on for their full statement!

DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian of Sydney’s 2Day FM station, who claimed to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles during a prank call to Kate Middleton’s hospital room on December 4, have released a statement after Jacintha Saldanhathe mother of two who transferred the call, was found dead on Dec. 6.

Southern Cross Austereo, the company that owns the station, has released a statement saying, “SCA and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.”

Mel and Michael are said to be “deeply shocked” by this tragedy, according to TMZ. Although they did prank call the hospital, Bonnie Fuller believes we shouldn’t blame them for the nurse’s death, since they couldn’t have predicted such a tragedy would occur.

The Prank Call Backstory

The DJs spoke to Kate’s private nurse at King Edward VII Hospital and were given actual information on Kate’s hyperemesis gravidarum condition.

During the phone call, you can hear DJ Mel posing as Queen Elizabeth II saying, “Hello, I’m just looking after my granddaughter, Kate. I wanted to see how her little tummy bug is going.”

It’s unclear exactly what the nurse told Mel, but she says the nurse, “was giving us real information,” that left her in shock.

“We were very surprised that our call was put through,” Mel is quoted as saying. “We thought we’d be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents.”

Prince William & Kate Middleton Release Statement on Nurse’s Suicide

St. James’s Palace also released a statement on the nurse’s suicide, saying, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha. Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”

These two idiots who get off at other peoples expense, should be completely banned from any sort of public broadcast or media, they should go and work at the nearest abattoir, or somewhere else away from the public eye were they can make a contribution to society…until forgotten about. When they realised that the young nurse was about to spill the beans they should have introduced themselves. There is nothing else they can do to right their wrong

it’s not the DJs’ faults that this woman is dead. It was quite literally a harmless prank. I blame the hospital for not having more security protocol in place, and for obviously not providing sufficient psychological exams for its employees. If this woman became this distraught so quickly after this happened, perhaps she was one obsessed with the royal family? In that case, perhaps she shouldn’t have been working in this capacity. And she was just the woman who “transferred” the call, not the woman who actually TOOK the call? This woman obviously had other issues going on. Something like this is “normally” not enough for someone to decide to off themself.

It’s cause and effect. If the call had not happened, the woman would be alive. End of story. You can try to find ways not to blame but it boils down to cause and effect.

How do you know she’d be alive? You can’t tell the future. You don’t know what else was going on in her life.

Exactly! For a normal person to be driven to suicide it takes at least months if not years. If she actually committed suicide there had to have been other factors present in her life to have caused it. I keep wondering to about the police wording on this one–an ‘apparent suicide’? Something doesn’t sound right here.

There are many people who are sincere and serious in their jobs. You have to pay attention to these innocent people. Don’t move the responsibility from the careless causer of the incident.

I totally agree with you. It’s not the DJs fault this woman is dead. It was a prank (big deal)! She chose to take her OWN life. What ever happened to personal responsibility??? People are nuts!

If Katrin was a noble person she would say something reasuring to these doctors and nurses that helped her, their work is hard and deserves respect.
After all the whole ridiculous “monarchy” lives at the expense of these honest hardworking people, at their taxes, but the selfish “kings” don’t have a kind word for these people?

I wonder if her co-workers commented on here gullibility regarding the hoax
I wonder if her supervisor gave her a dressing down with threats of dismissal or financial penalty
I wonder if hospital management offered her counseling
I wonder why she died in shame caused by uncaring, ignorant boobs
The last person who really displeased the Crown was Lady Diana and we know what happened
May God rest her soul and see to her children and family
May we all learn something from this tragedy

Exactly! You’re the first person I’ve seen who has said something about this. The last person who displeased the crown ended up dead. Maybe that’s also what happened to this nurse. So far the police are saying her death is ‘unexplained’ and that it’s an ‘apparent suicide’. I’m wondering how a person could get THIS upset THIS quickly that they’d kill themselves when they have 2 children at home depending on them. Personally, I just don’t believe it! I grew up having a suspicious mind and that’s how I feel about this death–suspicious!

Finger pointing is so easy.
how many of you listen(ed) to radio stations or even “worse” shows, that play phone pranks?

Now a nurse in her 40s, has comitted suicide, after a prank call.
Some questions remain.
Do you think phone pranks are funny?
Haver you ever played a phone prank on someone?
Was the phone prank the sole cause for the woman to commit suicide?

Let’s see how many of you are able to throw rocks at those miserable figures.
You guys could also gather and errect stake in front of the DJs home or in front of the radio station.
While you are at it, also travel to NY and threaten to kill Howard Stern or any other DJ that has ever played a phone prank on air.

Yea, I get it, but this was someone who could be giving birth to the future King or Queen of England. And Howard Stern and the rest of the pranksters can be just as bad. But a stolen car vs private personal information is different.

Yeah and I wonder just how angry it made the people who protect the royals? This death seems a bit suspicious to me. The last person to displease the crown was Princess Di and she ended up dead also.

The difference is it’s never acceptable to make prank calls to a HOSPITAL – HOSPITAL, HOSPITAL, HOSPITAL – you idiot. Why? Because they’re busy tending to sick people, some of whom unfortunately go on to die!

*sigh*
Have you ever worked in a hospital?
I can guess the answer though.

Of course the receptionists and nurses are always dealing with emergencies on their shift permanently. And yes they obviously take the time to talk to people on the phone while patients lie in their beds suffering from seizures. If any emergency whatsoever would have happened during the conversation, she would have dropped the phone instantly, to attend to that matter. According to your logic relatives are not permitted to call hospitals to enquire about the well-being of a relative (this is what that prank was about), because lives are in danger there. Don’t get me wrong, nurses’ work is hard work (physically and mentally), but there’s no need to dramatize stuff. It just makes you look stupid.

Before your next Einstein moment happens in public. “What if somebody needed an ambulance?”
The 911 or 999 calls and the routines to dispatch an ambulance is handled by completely different lines.

Our society is sinking to all time moral lows just for ratings and money. Shame on the radio pranksters. My thoughts are with the children of this young mother that died. No matter how or the cause of death it is very sad and did not need to happen.

This is weird news Hollywood Life!! there is still no statement if the nurse has committed suicide or was murdered, only statement released was that nurse was found unconscious in front of her apartment, and later died. this is not something someone kills themselves for.

yah, i know… i’m still wondering if this wasn’t some crazy Royal fanatic that got his hands on the woman. the london police have said something along the lines of it looking like a suicide, but for all we know they’re just saying that in hopes of keeping a murderer relaxed and thinking that nobody is on his/her tail. who knows. the whole thing is all very odd. all the woman did was transfer a call to another nurse (who then gave out the personal details), and the details that were disclosed were nothing scandalous to begin with- just that the princess had an uneventful night and hadn’t thrown up. you don’t abandon your two children by killing yourself over something so petty. they say neither the hospital nor the Royal palace were holding this woman personally accountable, and were in fact supportive of her. there is much more to this story that is going to come out. regardless, those dj’s will never forget this. they don’t need my condemnation or judgment. i feel sorry for everyone involved.

And what if she didn’t kill herself? Ever think of that? What if someone killed her? The police are saying her death was ‘unexplained’ and an ‘apparent suicide’. They don’t seem completely convinced, why are you? This woman had 2 children. Why would she, just a few days after this happens, kill herself? Oh no, there’s something rotten here.
