A Maine father made the ultimate sacrifice when he ran back inside his burning Maine home to save his three children — only to perish along with them inside. Read on for the tragic details.
Benjamin Johnson III watched in horror as his Orrington, Maine family home was engulfed in flames. When he ran back inside to try and his three kids, Ben, 9, Leslie, 8, and Ryan, 4, from the deadly fire, he never made it back out.
Only their mother, Christine Johnson, survived after escaping out of a second-story window.
The fire is believed to be caused by a wood-burning stove, which ignited cardboard boxes that were left inches away.
The family reportedly was waiting on a loan for a furnace, and were using the stove temporarily until they could properly heat their home.
Neighbors Terri and Doug Winslow heard Christine screaming, and opened the window to find her house ablaze. They called 911 — but when responders arrived on the scene it was too late.
The bodies of the three children were found in a bedroom on the second floor, and the father’s body was found at the top of the stairs.
A funeral will be held on Nov. 18, and the community is holding a bowling fundraiser on December 9 at the Family Fun and Hollywood Casino, where the family went hours before the tragedy.
Such a tragedy. Our thoughts are with the Johnson family during this difficult time.
