Maddox Derkosh, 2, was killed by a pack of wild dogs at the Pittsburgh Zoo after falling into the exhibit on Nov. 4. The autopsy on his body revealed he bled to death from the attack — so sad.

Maddox Derkosh, 2, tragically fell into the African painted dog exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo on Nov. 4, where he was viscously mauled to death in front of horrified onlookers. An autopsy confirms he died due to blood loss from the attack. Police and officials at the zoo are continuing the investigation into the toddler’s death, after he fell 14 feet from the barrier and into the exhibit where 11 dogs attacked him.

Witnesses say the boy fell onto a safety net designed to catch falling objects, but bounced out due to his small size.

“Very unfortunately, in this situation, the dogs were doing what the dogs would normally do,” zoo president Dr. Barbara Baker said during a press conference from the Pittsburgh Zoo on Nov. 5. “The question came to us of course immediately, ‘Why didn’t staff go in?’” she added, “it was too dangerous.”

The zoo closed on Nov. 4 following the attack, but reopened Nov. 6.

“The hardest part is going to be to explain to my kids that their playmate is no longer here,” family friend Rachel Majcher, 33, told TribLive.com. “His life will be celebrated.”

Maddox’s funeral will be held on Nov. 9, and his parents are asking for donations of toy construction trucks in the boy’s name to be given to a Christmas children’s charity.

Such a tragedy. Our thoughts are with Maddox’s family during this difficult time.

Maddox was not on the railing. He was held by his mother by the railing and squirmed and jumped. It was a horrible accident. How can anyone write horrible comments about someone going through such a terrible loss. She will never be the same. She loved her son

OMG…this is in no way the zoos fault. They had a net there for protection and for those of you saying the zoo personnel should have gone in obviously don’t read or know he was already dead by the time they got there it happened that fast. Its not everyday a little boy falls in the zoos exhibit. That mother should NOT have had her child on the railing at all. My kids always stayed on my hip secured and safe. While Im not going to say anything horrible about her decision to place him on a railing to “get a better look” because my heart goes out to that little boy. Its such a terrible accident that never should have happened!!!

I believe the zoo is ultimately responsible even though this poor mom used terrible judgement. First off from looking at the exhibit they did NOT take every preventive measure to ensure the safety of visitors. And they should have an emergency plan for every animal exhibit in place. I also agree that had many zookeepers stormed the exhibit together they could have rescued the poor baby. Yes they may have been attacked but I highly doubt any would’ve died. I also don’t understand why the parents didn’t attempt to jump in and save their baby as 14 feet for adults is not much of jump/fall. I know none of us can ever understand what any of them were thinking or experienced during that horrifying ordeal but i just pray that they did everything within their power that they thought was possible to save this little angel’s life!!!

I live in pittsburgh , I know the painted dogs enclosure,I also know no one carrys a gun A witness that seen everything said it took a really long time? for someone to come and It was a female veternairian on cruches hoping on one foot he said she was having a hard time loading a traqulizer gun with no tranqulizer. she then just fired it into the air and not at the dogs He said firearms were nowhere? and the whole time the kid was having his flesh riped off and screaming Cops got there to late

The child shouldn’t have been able to climb over the railing and fall 14 feet. We can’t blame the dogs because they are only acting on instincts and we can’t blame the zoo keepers. All you can do is hope that they did as much as they could to save the child. I’m just wondering what were the parents doing? The boy was 2 so I seriously doubt that he just climbed up there.

The Pittsburgh Zoo is a wonderful zoo! My husband and I live a few hours away and travel there to take our 1 and 3 year olds often. There are signs EVERYWHERE saying not to lift children on your shoulders or banisters! This is in no way the zoo’s fault. That baby should never have been lifted up! His mother should have known better and she should have been the one going in to save him!! I know mistakes and parenting go hand in hand, but not when it comes to safety and common sense. I can’t even imagine the pain his mother feels and my heart breaks for her that this happened, but blaming the zoo or the WILD animals is not how it should be. If it was an accident that his mother put him there and he fell then it was absolutely an accident for the zoo as well! The staff should not have risked their lives to go in, his mother should have. If you go there and see the exhibit he could have been held up and pulled out by any adult standing on the deck if someone would have run him like 6 feet. I can’t imagine standing there and listening to my baby scream and not throwing myself in… We are drawn to these beautiful animals and that’s the whole reason we go to zoos. We want to be near them, see them, experience them, but we go in knowing we are among the most dangerous animals in the world. That in its self is why even innocent acts have to be thought of a million times before you do them.. That is how you think as a parent and it shoulda, coulda, woulda been done in her mind before lifting that beautiful baby up. I pray they find peace and people stop pointing their fingers. If the zoo workers should have rushed in without thinking of their own safety then why didn’t his mother, family members, or any other visitor at the zoo? They did shoot the dog that would let go and they called the dogs off and shot darts. Keep casting your stones people. Rest in peace beautiful boy<3

Seriously???? The zoo keepers weren’t there when the baby fell? I mean their African dogs!!! Aren’t the a little office place to watch over those meat eating animals?? There should’ve been so they could of gotten ready to knock out all the African dogs with some sleep potion! And there were what? 11 of the dogs, why need so many? The family must feel devastated. They should have a zoo keeper person to watch over the dogs so they won’t have another incident!!!!!! Good luck to the famil!

How could they leave a child to die? It was the zoos responsibility to provide a safe environment and protect the public if safety precautions fail. That precious little boy was completely defenseless. At least the zoo could have had knock out darts or something. I am disgusted by the zoos lack of response. I will continued pray for this family. I love animals but a child’s life is worth more.

I love animals. I have a rescued cat and a rescued dog. I volunteer at a local shelter once a week. I donate to organizations that protect wild and endangered species. blah blah But when it comes down to a two year old boy being attacked by dogs, you shoot the damn dogs whether they are endangered or not. You don’t worry about scaring them with rakes and empty tranquilizer darts first – you just shoot them. Where are our priorities? And a four ft railing? Not sufficient. Not even close.

“The question came to us of course immediately, ‘Why didn’t staff go in?’” she added, “it was too dangerous.”

It was much more dangerous for a fragile baby to be left to be eaten alive.
They should have had the whole staff in there they all have heavy gloves & boots
shameful.
The mother has chosen her charities for people to send toy construction trucks
Words fail me on that one.
Looking at the little boy’s face infront of me has me sobbing I can’t look at him. His pleading screams went unanswered what are we? Animals protect their young better

Not only does this mother show bad judgement by letting her 2 year old sit on a dangerous railing – but she also named her kid Maddox.

Anyone who takes name cues from Angelina Jolie does not have good sense.

Maddox is a very old Welsh name. My great grandfather was named Maddox.

Why grown men and women wouldn’t risk their own welfare for the sake of a two year old boy being eaten alive by animals is beyond my comprehension. How do you stand and watch something like that and not intervene? I hope I would show more courage than that. And I hope with all my heart the fall knocked that poor little boy unconscious.

Why shoot all those dogs? Really? To try to save the little boy’s life, that why.
And why not shoot the live darts? To spare the child because one might hit him? Well, that rationale makes no sense in the end, does it?
I feel so sad for this mother. She was trying to have a fun day at the zoo, helping her son get a better view. Do you really think she intended for this to happen? God help the people who judge her. She is living in hell right now…FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. She does not need anyone to turn up the heat. Keep your mouths shut if you dare to make any negative comment. My question is for the Zoo Keepers. Where were they? Why did the little boy and witnesses have to SCREAM for five minutes for anyone to show up?

A fun day doesn’t involve putting your child in danger. She neglected the warning signs at the exhibit not to climb on the rails. Therefore, I hope her child’s death haunts her for the rest of her miserable life.

i cannot even imagine what the mom was thinking, but she is certainly receiving an ample dose of punishment for her mistake. dumb or not, i feel for her… the whole thing is just sickening. there is some barbaric about zoos and the caging of the animals, but it’s also a way to teach children to love and respect animals… so, i don’t know what the answer is with regard to those institutions. it’s a shame that the protective nets weren’t designed to catch the baby instead of bounce it into the pit- but it’s hard to account for all mistakes and accidents. it’s just awful. the whole thing. cannot imagine what that mom and the witnesses must be going through right now.

I agree with you about this is a way to teach our children about these animals that they may never see if it weren’t for the zoos. We have taken our grandchildren their plenty of times and they absolutely love it there and the painted dogs are actually my grandaughters favorite animal there. I do feel for the family and it makes my heart break for this little boy but a four foot fence is plenty big enough to keep small kids back away, I read where someone said 4 foot wasn’t high enough. You have to think the zoo made it 4 foot thinking about toodlers so that is plenty big enough if a child is higher than 4 foot then they are probably old enough to know better to try and climbover it. My grandkids were (2) 2 year olds a 3 year old a 5 year old and a 6 year old and it was high enough for them.

Luckily it isnt you.
The dogs were not to blame here. They just followed their nature. And I let you know I work in a zoo in The Netherlands. Most animals that are placed in zoo’s are there because their species would be extint if we kept them just in the wild.

This was a horrible tragedy. And yes it was a very dumb thing to ignore the warning signs. But the mother and the family has been punished enough. I wish them well.
