‘The Vampire Diaries': Why Elena Needs To Start Listening To Damon

For the second week in a row, Elena ignored Damon’s suggestions and ended up getting hurt. Maybe it’s time for her to start listening!

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend while watching the first two episode of The Vampire Diaries this season: No one in Mystic Falls is listening to reason. Well, more specifically, no one is listening to Damon (Ian Somerhalder), who has become the town’s sole voice of reason in the wake of Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) transformation. While I won’t deny that Stefan (Paul Wesley) loves Elena, his advice has consistently led her astray.

Point #1: ‘We all know the drill. You feed or you die.’

The characters’ aversion to logic began the minute Elena first woke up on the premiere. Noble as ever, Stefan promised her they’d exhaust every possible option to keep her from transitioning. Damon, meanwhile, knew that was an empty promise and didn’t want to get Elena’s hopes up. “You feed or you die” may have sounded harsh at the time, but given Elena’s dire predicament, I believe a little tough love was in order. Had she fed right away, Elena wouldn’t have had to suffer the way she did. Oh, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) wouldn’t have had to use black magic, which means Grams’ sprit might still be with us. Just sayin’.

Point #2: ‘You’re a vampire, Elena. Be a vampire.’

The denial continued on the Oct. 18 episode, as Stefan insisted that Elena should be raised on his bunny diet — you know, the one that only he has been able to master thus far. Despite Damon explaining that keeping Elena from human blood would prove detrimental to her development, he allowed Stefan to foolishly lead her into the woods for a hunt.

“Trust me, you’re going to be miserable,” Damon told Elena. And the look she gave him as she walked out of the room implied she agreed with him, but like everyone else on the show, didn’t want to admit he was right. Which he was.

This all relates back to the point I brought up after last week’s episode: One of the fundamental reasons Elena seems to prefer Stefan over Damon is because Stefan is totally whipped. He always agrees with Elena, and he always does what she tells him to do, even if it means putting her at risk. On both episodes of season four, Stefan has worked tirelessly to keep Elena from giving into her vampiric urges — yet the solution to all of her problems has been to drink human blood, whether it was from Matt (Zach Roerig) or that council guard.

In short: If Elena wants to avoid further harm to herself and others, she needs to start listening to Damon. I understand he’s been branded a loose cannon — and deservedly so — but he’s also one of the few characters who’s able to put logic ahead of his emotions.

And when it comes to staying alive in Mystic Falls, we all know emotions are the real enemy.

I think Elena will come to terms with how she feels for Damon after Episode 4. I think she will go behind Stefans back again and do something he doesnt want her to do. That will cauze a wedge. And I honestly think it will be Elena choosing to drink from Damon again..and they will have this real intensified moment with eachother. Damon may even drink from her. I dont think they will have sex yet. I think that will come later. But knowing how Stefan feels about her drinking on him will not overpass the way she feels for Damon in this episode.Come episode 7 we will see Elena getting taken to the Miss Mystic Falls pageant by Matt but by the end of the episode we should see someone else waiting for her…..DAMON. Which probably means Stefan and Elena will break up within the next few episodes. Julie Plec interviewed recently and said that we need to look how the “seeds have been sowed” basically when it comes to the triangle and everyone even Stelens fans can see that it’s stitching towards a Delena season. Im excited!!!!!

As usual Damon is right, again! Or are we going to see Elena going off on a murderous rampage this season?

Its not a Damon vs Stefan thing. Damon is mentally older in his maturity (not so much when it comes to Elena or his outburst). But for well being he certainly is. Damon accepts his Nature, and why she told him. She tried to talk to Stefan. While Stefan may be noble, he is still as bad as Damon. He did just kill a guard when he never did such things. Damon does this stuff all the time, Stefan S1 never used to-now he does. Double standard between that and ripperness with the over idealistic nature. I love the intentions of the character, but they just don’t work for me. Damon may not but he is consistent in being half good/bad and is easier to contend with.

So he too does things because of Elena or for her sake. This is over idealistic when it comes to her. Sure try it, but he didn’t listen to her. It made her sick. People are like WHY Elena. She was starving and craving…it was simple to see.

A ripper shouldn’t be teaching her and Damon was right …”her like me.” And rightly Stefan wants his girl to be with and like him. HE was all like’ here is my girlfriend who can be just like me’ and shrugs it off when she tries to communicate that. Another dreamy thing for SE but to me this ruins it for me. Everyone always gets hurt because of her and his choices like someone listed. Damon is no exception but in this one case he is the better teacher. Stefan should have her back, not be jealous. She was knowing that his bloodlust was hard for him.

Not saying to run to DE here, but she didn’t question Caroline. She was in a do or die situation though too. She did tell Stefan but he coated over it and it just irks me. Course Elena wouldn’t go on and tell him she can’t do it. He also just got better. Caroline and Damon can most help her. BOTH. The reality is that what she needs will drive a wedge between them and is that really her fault. “I thought he would understand’ speaks volumes. Damon drinks blood ok, but you don’t. Elena will resent this in Stefan.

She is trying to be this perfect thing for Stefan-its sad. Damon was her rock, he’s done bad things and yet been strong, and he drinks blood. How can Elena bring herself after all of that, to tell Stefan? Really? And he got jealous. Yes she should have told him more, and she had no idea about sharing. She was just starving.

Wow, in the poll, Damon’s 80%. Like I said before, Damon is always the one who ends up being the right one, has the right thing, option, or whatever… Elena should listen to Damon. Stefan can just go and get jealous seeing his brother helping Elena. He’d rather have her sick then Damon helping her. I wrote this before, the Writers are screwing with SE, and that….. SE is boring, unreal, bizarre and under-whelming. And BTW, I’m not here to fight…

I agree with your under-whelming comment Hina, I leave the room when they’re on. They insist on SE and the triangle as it’s suppose to be the basis of the show. But I don’t think they ever counted on Damon and Elena having such explosive chemistry and a huge following. It will only be a waste if they don’t move it along and follow through. I’d rather see angst between DE than SE. Paul has more chemistry with Candice. Elena and Stefan are both too dull. One needs to be different.

I didn’t like Stefans sulky attitude at all in this episode. It was “my way or the highway”. What happened to understanding and respecting choices or is that only when she is drowning and dying. He has the mind of a 17 year old boy, I guess he is one and yes Damon is looking after the children.

All I see is that Stefan and Elena can’t be themselves around each other. They are to be at their best, if not, hide it. All their problems are never discussed. Very unhealthy relationship.

BTW does anyone understand why it’s a probelm for Elena to keep the blood down? I mean Katherine was a doppelganger too, before she turned and she didn’t have any problems with consuming blood???

According to Damon, Elena must feed directly from the vein. She was able to keep the blood down after she feed from Matt. Katherine (with her attitude) probably had no problems feeding directly from people so she was ok.

I think Caroline is an ok choice to teach Elena about being a vampire, it’s just that she hasn’t been a vampire very long and Elena seems to have very abnormal diet problems. I think she needs someone to show her that it isn’t the end of the world if she hurts someone and I don’t think that Caroline has the stomach for that. Damon isn’t that sensitive and I think he can convince Elena about the necessities of being a vampire that doesn’t make her feel like she has to shut down completely.

I think Damon is more realistic than Stefan. He doesn’t sugercode it and says everything is going to be fine. I think he has the right attitude to Elena being a vampire. She must learn to controll the bloodlust, so when it really matters to keep the cool she will be able to do it, like in the church. Even Stefan hasn’t been able to keep to the animal diet, he has lost controll and when he did, he didn’t tell Elena that he couldn’t keep off the human blood. I think it was that behaviour that made Elena think that she has to be strong for Stefan and say “everything is fine”. Elena needs someone that she doesn’t have to be strong for, someone she can admit to that something is seriously wrong or hard. And from what we’ve all seen in 4×02 that person is Damon.

Just to note, even Stefan hasn’t mastered his “bunny diet”. If he had, he wouldn’t go off the rails every few years–which he has a pattern of doing even now.

Another commenter says Damon loses control a lot, which is an interesting way of looking at it. He drinks a lot of human blood in the midst of anger and passion, but he is always 100% in control of himself and when he can stop–the only thing is, he LIKES is. He likes killing and feeding. He likes being a vampire. And he’s cunning enough to pull it off.

Caroline is the ultimate vampire, but Caroline is also a control freak–she had the insatiable need to be in charge since she was human, so her transition to vampire made perfect sense.

While I’m not going to sit here and say Damon is the only one Elena should listen to, she should probably follow through now and then. She got insanely used to him being helpful last season, and it looks like she can’t completely let that go.

Damon’s methods aren’t always pleasant, but 85% of the time, his outcomes likely would have had less misery for all involved. At least since season 3, after he’d formed a few more tentative bonds with the main ensemble.

Exactly! Damon looses control when the people he loves most betray him or die. Everything is heightened as a vampire. So when Damon’s heart is broken, its beyond what we would feel, but 1000 times worse for him. The standards of a human can’t apply to a vampire. Damon keeps his emotions walled up so that he doesn’t get hurt, but he does get hurt, and its even worse for him, because he’s a vampire and because he tried to keep those feelings pent up like water in a dam, but if the dam breaks…well, we’ve seen what happens. But he’s always been in control of his bloodlust, from the moment he was turned up until now. Stefan has no business teaching Elena control. Caroline tried the bunny diet but it didn’t work. Its a system that NEVER works. Listen to Damon, Elena, and you’ll be an awesome vampire!

Stefan is projecting his own weakness about human blood onto Elena because he would not be able to handle it if she was a proper human feeding vampire. Elena went along with it because she is trying to make Stefan happy, but her body knows better and rejects the blood aka Stefan’s idea of what she should be.

In Damon’s defence, he gave the right suggestion first. She refused, so he tried a second option. Which did not work. I wonder if the fact that her blood was part of the spell tat created vampires in the first place if she more entrenched in being a core vampire then others would be. Only Katherine could help her with that; and I do not think she’ll be too thrilled hearing that Elena’s been Turned.

Did Caroline tell her to feed from Matt? Did Caroline do anything to help Elena expect the scene with April? Don’t get me wrong I love Caroline but I don’t think Caroline could help Elena…”Why can’t any Delena’s think of anything other than Delena”- Why can’t Stelena’s accept that Damon can help Elena more than Stefan and that he IS right most(!) of the time?

It has nothing to do with Delena. Damon is just one of the vampires with the best control of his behaviour when it comes to being around human blood and feeding from humans (unlike Stefan, as we all know). From what we’ve seen from Caroline, she’s just like Damon: she has control over her urges. So I think both Damon and Caroline could teach Elena how to be a vampire.

Btw, she only puked Damon’s blood. The other blood she puked was Bambi’s.

Stefan and Elena (actually just about everyone in MF) are so damn stubborn and think they know better than Damon that they refuse to listen to him when he is clearly making the most sense. He’s not being a pessimist. Damon is being a realist which is one of the biggest issues with Stefan and Elena…they both love living in denial. Maybe before it worked for them but they have much larger problems now and all their idealistic, avoidance of the truth behavior throughout the series has made things worse instead of better. Why does everyone listen to Stefan, the vampire who denies being a vampire, about how to live as a vampire and feed? They all seem to think that it’s better to deny your nature and act human because it makes the other humans comfortable. Damon is the only one of the group who accepts who he is. He didn’t like it when he first turned but he learned that denying it wasn’t going to change the facts. Damon has always been ridiculed for accepting who he is because they can’t accept him. Let’s hope Elena eventually leaves denial land and stands up to her friends and Stefan for once and says “Hey maybe we should listen to Damon. He’s usually right.” I don’t know about anyone else but I feel like it’s so glaringly obvious what needs to be done that I feel like Damon banging my head against the wall saying “why are you guys so stupid?”! UGH!

That is kinda what Damon did at the end there. “They are all Children… I’m stuck babysitting alone.” Bang your head against the wall, drink and voice your frustration at your dead best friend. Same difference. I frankly echo that. Stefan also needs a huge clue. He may not like it but Damon was Elena’s Rock for months, and just cause Stefan came back, does not mean she still won’t default to seeking Damon out for help when things go badly.

Stefan is a RIPPER with tenuous ability to keep it under control. It took him 60 years the first time, need I say more? He is the EXCEPTION to vampirism, NOT the rule. Most vampires can learn to control themselves and not kill those they feed on. Stefan needs to feed on animals because he’ll lose control. That doesn’t mean Elena has to do it. She’s not Stefan, and Caroline and Tyler don’t follow his diet either. They at least drink blood bags. But right now, Elena is a new vampire and she’s rejecting all the blood sources, and she needs blood from the vein. Stefan needs to accept that as does everyone.

And LOL at anyone who chose Caroline. Caroline gives the worst advice ever. For the longest she was so obsessed with Matt she couldn’t see what was right in front of her with Tyler. She’s the same age as Elena, and is a baby vamp, she’s only been one for a year. Elena needs someone with experience. Elena is a vampire, vampires drink human blood, it’s not any more wrong for them to do that than it is for humans to eat animals.

The real disturbing trend is that for the past 3 SEASONS Damon has pretty much always been right and people are still not listening to him.
I mean come on!

Elena wanted to sacrafice herself to save her friends, Damon was strongly against this. Elena claimed if she didnt go with it, people she loved would die. Ummm the first thing Klaus did was kidnap Tyler n Caroline to use (resulting in Damon being bit when saving them and Stefan having to go Rippermode to save Damon) despite this people Elena loved still suffered- Jenna died and Klaus became a hybrid –> leading to Klaus constantly tormenting her to get at her blood

Elena chose to trust her vampire hating witch friend to despell a device- leading to Damon and Stefan almost dying and Anna dying

Elena and Stefan didnt want her to feed leading to her eventually feeding anyway and making Bonnie resort to dark magic

Elena told Stefan to save Matt first hence killing herself.

Elena and Stefan thought she should trust Esther (the witch trying to kill all vampires in existance) leading to her using Elena’s blood to make Evilaric and hence as a result of the poor decision above, ultimately leading to Alarics death.

Elena and Stefan need to just stop. JUST STOP. And listen to Damon.

Memorial is a perfect example of that. Elena is throwing up blood and goes to Damon for help, and while asking for help. FROM DAMON, has the stupidity to say “Stefans right I should try to get through this without hurting anyone” Ummmm then why go to Damon at all if Stefan is right?
Oh of course, because Damon was right, as always and gets no credit.

I truly hope Julie Plec is doing this on purpose so the audience has the brains at least to side with Damon. Otherwise its just plain frustrating.

Rant over.

Like Damon said, every vampire can control their urges because they learned to properly feed 1st. Stefan being the only exception (a ripper) should be the last person trying to teach Elena about being a vampire. It’s a good she started going to Damon, behind Stefan’s back, in the end.
