Thankfully the steal option came long this season! Otherwise, we would’ve said goodbye to two stars tonight!
Welcome back, fans of The Voice, as we continue to barrel through the battle rounds! Our favorite coaches (Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton) dispatched some more of our favorites in favor of their own, though two shining stars, including Jocelyn Rivera got a last-minute reprieve thanks to the new steal options!
Julio Cesar Castillo vs. Teresa Griffin
The two meet with Blake and advisor Michael Bublé, where they learn that they’ll be singing “Conga” by Gloria Estefan. Initially, the speed and urgency of the lyrics trip Julio up, even though Blake believed that the Latin commonalities would serve him well. Teresa is concerned because it’s not a ballad. She even tells Blake that they were paired up to get rid of her. In later rehearsals, Julio is intimidated by both the lyrics and Teresa. Julio holds his own well during the battle, but Teresa can sing miles around him — for me, the victor was clear. Blake hands the win to Julio, though, as he finds him most improved. But don’t worry about Teresa too long — Cee Lo utilizes the steal option and ensure we don’t have to say good-bye to her tonight!
Dez Duron vs. Paulina
These two, who were both rather blah in their blind auditions, meet Christina and advisor Billy Joe Armstrong to rehearse their song, “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars. In rehearsals, both vocalists live up to their blah auditions. Suffice it to say, I didn’t really care which way this battle went. If I had to pick someone from the battle, I guess I’d pick Dez, but, really, meh. Christina choose Dez, as well. No one steals Paulina. Oh well.
Benji vs. Sam James
These two are singing “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi because that’s what you give guys who can rock, duh. Personally, I think it would’ve been more fun to see these two try to step outside their comfort zones. Also, growly rock just isn’t my cup of tea. Benji just wants to growl his way through the whole song, which Adam wisely advises him not to. Honestly, I looked away for a few seconds during the battle and couldn’t tell who was singing, but when Benji went for his scream, his vocals sort of fell apart. Adam gives the win to Sam, which I think is a good decision.
Nicholas David vs. Todd Kessler
You know the blind auditions went on too long when you can’t remember either people in the battle. Who are these two again? By mid-intro package, I remembered Nicholas. But Todd? Not a clue. Cee Lo chose Hall & Oates’ “She’s Gone” for the two bearded wonders. Both sounded really nice during their battle, though I might give the edge to Nicholas for his more lived-in voice. The two blended well together, though. In the end, however, Cee Lo gave the win to Nicholas. No one moves to save Todd. Bye, Todd!
Lelia Broussard vs. Suzanna Choffel
Blake picked “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine to put these two indie ladies to the test. In the initial rehearsal, Suzanna is shaky and seems really insecure. Meanwhile, Lelia is all over it. This song is totally in her wheelhouse. Blake hands the win to Suzanna. Sadly, no one steals Lelia. Good luck in the future, Lelia!
Sylvia Yacoub vs. Jocelyn Rivera
Christina matches these two power belters up on Beyonce‘s “The Best Thing I Never Had,” which might be dangerous for the two because no one can sing like Beyonce and trying too hard to sing as powerfully as her will only expose weaknesses. During rehearsals, Jocelyn lets Sylvia walk all over her — she needed to stand her ground. I think Sylvia went a little too crazy with her runs. Jocelyn demonstrated much more control. Christina, of course, went with Sylvia. Adam and Blake went in for the steal, thankfully, leaving it up to Jocelyn to decide which new team she would join. Jocelyn eventually chooses Adam.
What did you think of tonight’s episode, HollywoodLifers? Are you glad that Jocelyn and Teresa were stolen and saved? Let me know in the comments below!
