During her special TV interview with Dr. Drew, Amber admitted that she was so addicted to drugs, she didn’t care about anything else — not even her 3-year-old daughter Leah.
Amber Portwood revealed to Dr. Drew Pinksy during her MTV special Amber Portwood Behind Bars that she didn’t just occasionally abuse prescription pills — she was a hardcore drug addict. And nothing else, not even her daughter Leah Shirley, 3, mattered to her.
“I was still doing drugs,” she said. “I started to move to harder drugs.” Those harder drugs were fentanyl patches, which are highly concentrated and highly dangerous pain killers that come in the form of a gel.
While patients with severe and chronic pain are supposed to wear the plastic patches on their skin to be absorbed, Amber was ingesting them directly through her mouth — and Dr. Drew said that is an easy way to overdose and die.
Amber said she understood she was in that kind of danger, but she didn’t care.
“Even Leah didn’t matter do you?” Dr. Drew asked.
“No, nothing mattered to me,” she said. “It’s not that you don’t love your child; you’re a very selfish person when you’re an addict.”
“All I wanted was to find drugs so I didn’t have the withdrawl, and I didn’t care about who was in my way,” she added. “You always think about, when am I going to get my next pills.”
Luckily, Amber admitted that being in jail for five years has saved her life. She’s incarcerated in the therapeutic program, which is helping her stay sober through Narcotics Anonymous, and change her behavior with anger management classes.
“I’ll be home soon,” Amber said as a message to her daughter. “I’ll actually be there for her this time.”
