E L James’ erotic novel is one step closer to hitting the big screen as Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced Oct. 8 they hired Kelly Marcel to the bestseller into a feature film.

Kelly Marcel, a 38-year-old British writer, is best known for her work on the late Fox series Terra Nova. On the big screen, she most recently wrote the script for Saving Mr. Banks, film about the making of Mary Poppins. That movie, which is currently in production, will star Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Poppins writer P.L. Travers.

“Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,” said Michael De Luca, one of the films producers. “We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley’s engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” added co-producer Dana Brunetti.

The bestseller that had everyone buzzing follows the hot, steamy relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele.

The book is notorious for its explicitly erotic scenes and wild sex explorations.
