We were warned, and now I know why. Three major couples called it quits in the Oct. 4 episode of ‘Glee.’
Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith), Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss), Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris), along with Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma (Jayma Mays) — all faced the toughest tests of their relationships to date on the Oct. 4 episode of Glee. Unfortunately, as my exhausted emotions can attest to, only one couple comes out of the episode alive, and even they were left on shaky grounds. Brace yourselves, Gleeks.
Santana & Brittany
Santana returns to Lima for her routine laundry session at home. She claims it’s due to a water issue at college, but I’m sure a part of her just really misses Brittany. The two lovebirds spend quality time folding clothes while Brittany invites Santana to an after school religious club she’s recently joined.
During the club meeting at Breadstix, one unlucky member is tricked into thinking she’s been abandoned by the entire group. She starts hyperventilating and Santana thinks this club is not something Brittany should be involved with.
Brittany points out the girl hyperventilating on the floor and explains that’s how she felt when Santana left for school. Brittany says she felt abandoned and Santana needs to realize how hurt she was.
Santana and Brittany meet up in the chorus room of McKinley High where Santana decides they go their separate ways for now as she doesn’t want them to become one of those long-distance couples who hang in there for a few months, then “break up when someone eventually cheats or things get weird.”
Rachel & Finn
Rachel treats her surprise visit from Finn in the best way she can. After spending an entire night not speaking, Rachel finally breaks the silence by suggesting Finn follow her to all of her classes and get a feel for NYADA — in hopes that he will grow interest and apply to their acting program. Unfortunately, the plan backfires and Finn finds himself as a sitting duckling on the side of Rachel’s dreams.
Rachel and Finn accompany Kurt and Blaine to a karaoke bar hangout where Rachel hopes to sing a duet of “Give Your Heart A Break” with Finn. When Brody (Dean Geyer) shows up, Finn suggests THEY sing the song together. (I’m not sure of Finn’s motives, but they certainly looked hot on stage together.) Finn can sense their chemistry and chokes up on his emotions.
Rachel and Finn have a small argument on the way home, leading Finn to head home in the morning — unbeknownst to Rachel! Yes, that’s right. He did the walk of shame right out of Rachel’s apartment, but no hanky-panky was involved.
Rachel flies home to Lima to see Finn after he refuses to answer his phone. Rachel gets raw and tells Finn exactly how she feels — that she was angry at him for breaking up with her last spring. She felt abandoned, but then realized how much he loved her. And while he will always be the first boy who made her feel loved, and visible, she refuses to be the person that has to constantly tell Finn he’s good enough.
“You are my first love, and I want more than anything for you to be my last love, but I can’t do this anymore. We’re done,” Rachel says.
Kurt & Blaine
Blaine really misses Kurt and finds it difficult when Kurt is too busy with his work to maintain their phone dates and nightly Skype sessions. Kurt even hangs up on Blaine without saying “I love you.” (How could he do that to Blaine?)
Blaine gives in to temptation and ends up hooking up with a new guy name Eli. Most likely feeling guilty, Blaine flies to New York City to surprise Kurt. Kurt is giddy from the sight of Blaine and they head out with Rachel and Finn to a karaoke bar.
Blaine seems quiet most of the night, but manages to sing an acoustic version of “Teenage Dream,” in hopes of reigniting the romance with Kurt.
On their walk home, Kurt senses something is wrong and fishes the issue out of Blaine. Blaine admits he cheated on Kurt and felt really lonely.
“It didn’t mean anything. It was just a hookup, okay?” Blaine cried. “I was lonely and I’m really sorry.”
Kurt is devastated and Blaine heads home, unsure of where his relationship with Kurt stands.
Sadly, Kurt tosses Blaine’s “forgive me” note into the garbage when a bouquet of flowers lands on his desk at work.
Will & Emma
Will gets accepted to be a part of the blue ribbon panel to improve arts education in Washington, D.C. He invites Emma to drop everything and come along with him for a number of months. Emma explains that she loves her job and doesn’t want to become someone who waits around in a motel room while their significant other follows their dreams.
No resolution is accomplished and their relationship is on shaky grounds at the close of the episode.
What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Which break up are you most sad about? Luckily, there may be hope for the future!

“Excuse me, “Sick of drama,” but I don’t understand how Brittany having a storyline and Brittana are mutually exclusive. That’s a false dichotomy. Brittany should have a storyline about finding her own “inner unicorn” (i.e. self-worth) in the midst of all of these disappointments, Santana should have a storyline about finding herself outside of the safety and power of WMHS and the choir room (build her future), and Brittana should have a storyline about working themselves back to their relationship, and then how to handle their new adult roles and their relationship at the same time. It’s not that hard; RIB seriously needs to reevaluate what viewers want to see though. I’m already tired of the 2.0 characters and the time they take away from the characters we want to see. Brittana are background, but they don’t have to be.”
Amen. I copy and pasted the whole thing because it is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Also, I second all of the opinions that Blaine cheating was totally out of character. Blaine wouldn’t do that and, in all fairness, there were enough cracks in the relationship for Klaine to break up WITHOUT the cheating storyline. However, as hard core a Brittana shipper as I am, I will never hate watching Rachel and Finn. Lea Michele is too talented to take your eyes off of. And Finn IS a man. I am proud of him for the way he tried to handle the Rachel situation at the end of last season and I’m proud of Rachel for the way she’s handling it now. Growth. That’s what our characters are doing. And honestly, I think the real problem with the show is that episodes are only 45 minutes long. Maybe, if each episode was 90 minutes or so, I would be significantly happier and the writers wouldn’t have to be so ruthless when editing both their episode drafts and the show.
