Warning: Stop reading if you don’t want to know who was killed on ‘Sons of Anarchy.’

Wondering why Kurt Sutter was trending on Twitter last  night? It might have something to do with the fact that the Sons of Anarchy creator decided to suddenly kill off one of the show’s most beloved characters — and fans were not happy about it. So which biker bit the bullet on the Sept. 25 episode? Drumroll please…

Opie (Ryan Hurst)!

Here’s how he met his tragic end: Pope (Harold Perrineau) worked out a deal with Jax (Charlie Hunnam), forcing him choose which of the Sons would enter a behind-bars death match. Ever the valiant hero, Opie decided to attack one of the prison guards, essentially volunteering himself to fight. Though he gave it his all, and seemed to stand a pretty good chance, he was eventually beaten to death by a lead pipe. (For a more in-depth analysis of last night’s episode, check out the recap on HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site TVLine.)

As you might imagine, fans immediately took to Twitter to express their outrage:

“@sutterink i absolutely hate you,” tweeted user @dmpullen.

“@sutterink DAMN YOU!” added @WaltonsCastro.

Even Avenged Sevenfold drummer Mike Portnoy joined the mob: “I cannot believe what I just watched…why @sutterink why????????”

UPDATE: Kurt spoke with reporters Sept. 26, explaining why he decided to kill Opie.

Were you shocked by Opie’s sudden death? Do you think it was a huge mistake, or will it make for good drama moving forward? Drop us a comment with your thoughts on the dearly departed.

I know Ryan Hurst wanted to extend he’s career but SOA is not the same without him!! Charlie is a better person with Ryan by he’s side.
What”s with this whole new story with Jax & Tara seriously all Tara wants to do is what they were set out to do at the end of season 4.
Does Jax have to cheat on Tara every season honestly who really loves who more?

Just so everyone is clear, Kurt sutter didn’t just decide one day to write opie out of the show. Ryan hurst intended to leave to persue his film career. I commend Kurt sutter for the ingenious ideas he comes up with. He had to write opie out of the show, what a way to go out, with dignity and pride!! Pull ur heads in ppl and stop hating!!

I was completely shocked. I loved Opie, but I don’t think it was a huge mistake. Those shockers are what makes the show so fresh and interesting.

Opie was one of the best on there…He will be greatly missed…I hate it had to be him, but between the 4 that went in, Opie had lost everything except for Jax, the club and his kids…I think everyone was expecting Chibs to be the one to go, it was a shocker and that’s putting it lightly…I hope FX continues to want future seasons of SOA, this is one of the best and most popular shows on TV…

Shocked, the best realistic biker type and the badest of the sons. I am having a hard time imagineing sons without opie, who will kill clay now, opie should have been the one.

its a decision when writers write, do they want to risk viewing figures or finish on the journey they started with a particular character or story. I think with Opie the ‘journey’ for him had come to an end he just about gave up on the club. But in terms of viewing figures it can go two ways, less or more!
