Honey Boo Boo’s Mama June opened up in a recent interview about her granddaughter Kaitlyn’s third thumb, and why she’ll have the extra appendage for a little bit longer. Read on to find out more details.

Anna “Chickadee” Shannon, 18 and the oldest sister in the Here Comes Honey Boo Boo clan, gave birth to daughter Kaitlyn over the summer, and her baby was born with an extra thumb on her right hand. However, the Honey Boo Boo matriarch, Mama June Shannon, said why they aren’t fixing her deformity any time soon.

“She may or may not ever get surgery to remove one of the thumbs,” the coupon queen told RadarOnline.com.

“They just have to wait and see,” she said. “They don’t want to do it too early, if they cut one off the other could have paralysis or it could make the other fingers not work, so they don’t want to make any rash decisions.”

Although having an extra thumb is different from the norm, June said it’s not a big deal to her or her family.

“She’s just special; I would never make fun of her. That is not right,” she added. “It makes her more unique and special to us. We don’t even pay attention to it.”

The birth of two-month-old Kaitlyn will be featured on the season finale their TLC reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo on Sept. 26. Meanwhile, Mama June said they’re not making the baby’s surgery a priority.

Wow really she was born with an extra finger so what want to point fingers and say incest really lol there is nothing wrong with them waiting to decide if the child should undergo surgery and I’m sorry I have had surgery on my hand and its painful having a baby go through that just so a couple of judgemental pricks like you can be satisfied its their decision I’m sure if that extra finger was causing difficulties the doctors would have requested the finger be removed when she was born I mean twins are born sometimes mended together you want to cut one off because the rest of the world finds it out of the normal

I saw this show once and it grossed me out (the show, not the thumb). However, I find myself agreeing with the decision to leave the baby’s little hand as it was when she was born. Making a child undergo surgery just so they look the way the parents feel they should look is wrong wrong wrong.

I FEEL; THE BABY SHOULD HAVE THE EXTRA THUMB REMOVED BECAUSE IT COULD Cause problems when she goes to school with kids making fun of her. also it could get in the way of everyday task. she does not need 3 thumbs, thats why god gave us 2.

THE EXTRA THUMB IS BECAUSE THIS KID WAS BORN OF INCEST. THE FATHER OF THE BABY IS THE GIRL’S OWN FATHER. THEY ARE NOTHING BUT SCUM.

My daughter Kiara Caitlyn (ironically) was also born with a second thumb same hand. She eventually had surgery when she was 5 because it was going to cause issues and pain. Otherwise I would of let her keep it unless she had asked not to. I miss it!! She could actually use it. Now her other thumb does not Ben properly so second surgery sometime soon.

you people are idiots the sooner the baby has the finger removed the less likely she is to remember having it. these inbreds shouldn’t be on tv as simple as that

I answered no. Not now. It’s not important. Maybe as she gets older. Medical research improves daily, so I don’t think it’s a nessesaty right now. She’s healthy, and that I’m grateful for. God bless baby! And family.

THAT BABY IS WAY TOO YOUNG TO UNDERGO SOMETHING THAT IS PURELY COSMETIC. I APLAUD JUNE FOR SYING SHE IS JUST SOMETHING SPECIAL TO THE FAMILY. SHE SURELY IS. IT IN NO WAY HINDERS HER.

I can’t believe so many people have voted yes the baby should have surgery! she said it clear right there, surgery now could harm her other fingers! It is just a physical piece of that baby that is different but why would you risk her actual mobility just to fix something that doesn’t look right. that is just horrible!

My son was also born with a bifurcated right thumb. They did reconstructive surgery on it at 6 months and then another surgery to adjust some ligaments and tendons at age 5. His surgeon took both thumbs and “combined them” to construct a new one. He did such a great job, my son excelled at competitive gymnastics! Find the right surgeon and the best procedure… and then have the surgery. It is not a cosmetic procedure…
