A day of celebration turned horrific after a toddler was found lying face down in a toilet during Rosh Hashanah dinner. Read on for more of the tragic details.

Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish New Year, but for the family of 14-month-old Mendi Altman in Brooklyn, N.Y., the holiday became a nightmare.

Mendi’s 13-year-old cousin discovered the toddler face down in a toilet around 11 p.m. in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn. He was unconscious and unresponsive, and rushed Maimonides Medical Center at around 12:40 a.m. where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to the Daily Mail.

The little boy is from the town of Monsey in Rockland County, and was visiting his aunt to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

No foul play is suspected, but there won’t be an autopsy performed since it is prohibited under Jewsish law. The body has been returned to the grieving family, and burial usually takes place within 24 hours in Orthodox Judaism. However, the funeral may be delayed since the boy’s father is out of town in Europe at a holy site, according to WPIX.

How tragic. Our thoughts are with Mendi’s family during this difficult time.

They found the boy at 11, but he wasnt rushed to the hospital till 12:40? Stupid caregivers! It doesnt matter whos fault it was. Simple solution, Someone should be in charge of there own kids.

perhaps thats when the ambulance was able to get there, they would have tried to revive him on the scene before they took him to hospital.

Who was responsible for the baby? Somebody is guilty of negligent homicide in the death of this 14 month old baby. May the boy RIP.

People make mistakes, its a big family celebration. very easy to loose track of who’s watching the child. aunt susie was feeding him crackers, then uncle joe was playing airplane, grandma was pinching his cheeks…. then oh, where did he go? who was with him last? I see no reason to charge someone with neglect. it would only add to the families suffering. it was a horrible accident.
