A day of celebration turned horrific after a toddler was found lying face down in a toilet during Rosh Hashanah dinner. Read on for more of the tragic details.
Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish New Year, but for the family of 14-month-old Mendi Altman in Brooklyn, N.Y., the holiday became a nightmare.
Mendi’s 13-year-old cousin discovered the toddler face down in a toilet around 11 p.m. in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn. He was unconscious and unresponsive, and rushed Maimonides Medical Center at around 12:40 a.m. where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to the Daily Mail.
The little boy is from the town of Monsey in Rockland County, and was visiting his aunt to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.
No foul play is suspected, but there won’t be an autopsy performed since it is prohibited under Jewsish law. The body has been returned to the grieving family, and burial usually takes place within 24 hours in Orthodox Judaism. However, the funeral may be delayed since the boy’s father is out of town in Europe at a holy site, according to WPIX.
How tragic. Our thoughts are with Mendi’s family during this difficult time.
