Everybody knows The Vampire Diaries‘ Matt Donovan is an exceptional human being — including his portrayer, Zach Roerig. “Matt does have a very, very strong weapon,” Zach says in a new video interview with The CW. Do you want to know what it is? Are you ready for it? OK, here goes: it’s his “moral compass!”
“He’s the only character that truly lives by a moral compass,” Zach adds — a fact I definitely don’t disagree with.

As one of the few surviving humans, I think that Matt is a vital character on The Vampire Diaries. He is never involved with the drama, so he always has a refreshing opinion as the rational outsider. A co-worker at Dish and I were discussing the underused characters on the show recently, and like Bonnie we agree this season needs more Matt. I hope to see this when I watch the premiere on my Hopper. With my busy schedule this October, I am really glad that it has 2,000 hours of recording space. Especially because I am most intrigued to see Matt’s reaction to “Vampire Elena,” after she saved his life in the finale. It’s true that he is the only character to live by his “moral-compass,” so I am sure he will have the most realistic reactions to the situation.
