Britney takes over Simon’s throne as the mean judge and Demi’s special bond with a contestant brings the entire stadium to tears in the season premiere of ‘The X Factor.’

Two very emotional auditions leave Simon Cowell, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato in tears during the September 12 premiere. Read on for the full recap!

After a video intro from X Factor alums One Direction (squeee!), auditions kick off in Austin, Texas. Britney confides in her manager that judging and critiquing people trying to chase their dreams is going to be really hard for her while Demi admits she is super nervous!

Stars Are Born

The first audition was Paige, 21, a mother of a beautiful 3-year-old girl. She sang Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Going Down” and totally killed it!

Britney said, “You’re flawless,” while L.A. called her a star and said she reminded him of a young Rihanna! Simon said that it was one of his favorite auditions ever!

Later, Reed, 13, looks like Justin Bieber and sings not one, but two Bruno Mars songs to try to impress the judges. Although he is a little rough around the edges, all four judges say “Yes” to Reed.

The Good, The Bad And The Rude

Kaci Newton, 22, a bank teller, is annoying from the get-go. She sang Katy Perry’s firework and “sounded like she was dying,” according to Simon. She got four no’s, and she deserved them.

Shawn, 50, takes the stage and brags that he’s been rehearsing every night for the past 18 months! After horrendous singing and dancing, Demi says a lot of people work hard for their dreams but that doesn’t mean they are right for fame.

“That’s why you use autotune and I don’t,” Shawn slammed at Demi. Britney immediately defended her, saying “Who let you on stage?”

After a hysterical montage of Britney saying no, no, no wrong key, wrong song, Simon comments, “and people think I’m the mean one!”

When Demi tells Simon, “Oh by the way, Niall says hi,” Simon snaps back, “Keep away from him! He’s pure!” Demi says “I’m not looking for anything, I’m not going to date anybody for a year and I’ve made that clear to him!” Have you kissed him?, he asks. “No!” she squeals back. Uh huh.

Save Me, San Francisco

After a montage of horrible auditions, including a man who was possibly drunk and a drag queen, we met Emblem3. The group of three guys ages 15, 18 and 19 sang an original song about California. A mix of rap and singing, they had the entire audience clapping and singing along! “I predict big things going forward,” says Simon.

Next, Don Phillip came onstage and Britney gives him a funny look. Turns out he did a duet with Britney about 10 years ago. “I never thought I’d see you again,” he told he after he broke down on stage. He sings Beyonce’s “Halo” – unfortunately, he was super disappointing. After he gets four no’s, he is shocked and appalled that his old BFF Britney voted against him. “I never meant to hurt Britney,” he sobbed backstage. Simon even checks on Britney by asking her if she’s ok. Rough!

Off To Rhode Island

Auditions pick up in Providence, where we met Jennel Garcia, 18. She says Pat Benatar is her biggest inspiration. She totally rocked Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ song “Paris” to a standing ovation! “That was absolutely incredible,” gushed Britney. “You are on the money. You’re different, you’re exciting, I like you a lot,” said Simon. After a “big fat yes” from Simon and the other judges, Jennel celebrates with her friends and family. Love her!

Stay Strong

The last (and best?) audition of the night is Jillian. Coincidentally, like Demi, she has the tattoo “stay strong” — for similar reasons as Demi. She admits was bullied in middle school and cried herself to sleep every night. She sings “Who You Are” by Jessie J.

Demi comments, “You can feel that pain,” while she is singing. After her emotional performance, Demi starts crying and leaves the judges table to go hug Jillian on stage. “I have never heard anyone take their experiences, their pain and put it into a song like you did. Ever,” says L.A. “That was incredible,” Simon chokes out, as he nervously eats. “I cannot believe how amazing that just was,” Demi cries.

After she gets four yes votes, her family and friends run on-stage to hug her and the judges give her a standing ovation. Simon says, “I lost it. I’ve never ever done that in my life.” Demi jokes, “You have a heart!”
