The troubled ‘Teen Mom’ star will be behind bars for up to five years, but her mom Tonya insists being locked up has helped Amber turn her life around — she has lost 25 pounds, and even joined the jail choir! Read on to find out more details.

Amber Portwood is no stranger to the legal system, and it would seem that being in jail for five years after refusing to complete rehab would have made her hit rock bottom, but it looks like being in the slammer has done some good for the 22-year-old mother.

The Teen Mom star’s mom Tonya Portwood said in an interview with MailOnline that Amber is actually in a much better place now than she was a few months ago.

“My first visit with Amber was emotional and filled with lots of hugs and tears, but she looks great and she’s already done a complete 180 since being locked up,” Tonya said.

She has even joined parenting classes and the jail choir!

“Now instead of fighting and taking drugs Amber is heavily into the jail choir and practices every day with them,” she continued. ” She is loving it and hopes one day (Amber’s daughter) Leah will come and watch her perform.”

Being incarcerated has even helped Amber adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“She’s lost a lot of weight by staying active and even though the guards and inmates try to pick fights Amber is staying out of trouble and spending time each day writing a book about her life,”

Tonya remains optimistic that Amber is on the right path, and hopes she will be able to ger her prison sentence reduced for good behavior.

“Prison is really helping Amber turn her life around and she’s exactly where she needs to be right now,” she said and added, “Amber wants to help rehabilitate other teen moms with similar problems to finally use her fame for good.”

Good for Amber. We wish her all the best and that she finds the help she needs.

i’ve often been mad hearing about her out of control antics, but i actually am really cheering her on and have hope for her. her decision to go to jail instead of rehab seemed crazy, but when she explained why… i hoped she could find some good in it. i hope she learns some self control and is able to keep it together when she gets out, being 5 years older, and more mature. good luck, amber. don’t think it’ll be easy, and that you won’t have set backs, but try to keep it in control and regain your composure even when/if you lose it. lots of us are cheering you on!

I’d make a joke, but it’s too sad! I really feel for her situation even though she brought it on herself. Kudos to her for turning her life around.

I think MTV is the bigger culprit, not being a teen mom. Also, being a teen mom didn’t change her as a person – for the better or worse – so, chances are, she would’ve ended up in jail anyway. She would’ve just taken a different route.
