Aimee contracted a flesh-eating bacterial disease after a zip-lining accident in May, and for the first time since she left the hospital, she walked on Katie Couric’s new daytime talk show!
We are so proud of Aimee Copeland. The 24-year-old appeared on the second day of Katie Couric‘s new show Katie on Sept. 11 and she shared her remarkable story of survival and how she learned to deal with having her 4 limbs amputated.
Aimee says she reminds herself every single day just how lucky she is to be alive:
“It’s something I had to do every moment of every day,” she says. “It’s not something that I’m like ‘oh great I accomplished this, it’s something I have to get through at every moment. Sometimes it doesn’t work, and sometimes it’s bad. It’s just that fight … In everyone’s life we all have struggles we have to get thru at every moment.”
Aimee was in and out of consciousness, and she says she was fully aware that doctors were going to have to amputate all of her limbs.
“I think the most extreme moment was when my dad lifted up my hand for me to see and he said ‘this isn’t healthy is it?’” she said. “‘We’re going to have to cut them off.’ It was a very intense moment. I said, ‘let’s do this!’ What else are you going to do?”
But one thing is for sure: dying was never an option for this fighter.
“[Dying] was never an option, I love life, it’s a beautiful thing,” she told Katie. “I don’t take for granted anymore how beautiful it is. Seeing the sunrise, ocean, animals, the senses are so deepened. Smell, everything smells better, colors are more vibrant than ever before. Instead of saying I’m disabled, I say I have different abilities.”
