‘Pretty Little Liars’ Summer Finale: 5 Burning Questions Answered

Who shot who? Is that guy really ‘A’? Not every answer on the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ summer finale was spelled out in black & white.

To call the Pretty Little Liars summer finale the best episode of the season wouldn’t even begin to do it justice. Some major answers were finally given Aug. 28, but after going through the comments in my recap, I noticed just as many questions were being raised. So now I’m doing my best to help you figure out who’s dead, who shot who, and what the “A” is up with Garrett (Yani Gellman).

1. Is Toby really “A?” Though some commenters insist the “Toby” we saw was actually someone else in a mask, I remain pretty certain it was Toby (Keegan Allen). My guess is that, while he is definitely a member of Mona’s “A” team, he probably got in just to figure out how to beat her.

2. Who shot Caleb? I’ve heard everyone from Nate to Paige (Lindsey Shaw) to Emily (Shay Mitchell), but I’m really thinking it was Toby.

3. Is Caleb dead? No! If you watch the promo for the Pretty Little Liars Halloween special, you can clearly see Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) devouring each other’s faces.

4. Who killed Maya? I know he never literally said, “I killed Maya,” but Nate was definitely her killer. He was her stalker at Tru North, and he found her hiding out at Noel’s cabin. Plus, he tried to kill Emily and Paige. He’s the lady killer.

5. Did Garrett make that call to Emily? Again, I assume the answer here is yes. Right before Garrett — who had been accused of killing Maya (Bianca Lawson) — showed up at the hospital, someone called Emily and said, “I owe you one.” Since Emily inadvertently helped prove his innocence, it very well could have been Garrett on the phone.

I really think that Toby is a new A. He has to be. He definitely has not been in the A team for more than three episodes when he told Spencer he was going to find answers then he says he has a job somewhere else to cover up his absence. It is impossible that he could be A in episodes before that because he could not have been around so much. Also we can’t just ex out Jenna from the A team and assume that Toby is definitely a real bad intentioned A. He is taking orders from someone else because Mona got a call from someone else saying there is a change of plans and then she told Toby, then Toby called Emily to warn her to get out! Because he is actually good. We also can’t forget the lady in Vivian’s/Ali’s red jacket who visited Mona when she first entered the mental hospital. Toby made it pretty clear that he loves Spencer like the night Wildon had them in the police station certain they were guilty, Toby visited Spencer and told her he loved her. In past seasons nothing has been off with Toby until the episode he told Spencer he was going to find answers then he started acting weird. Anyway I’m almost certain he is in it to destroy the A team. Everybody is a Spoby fan and if they make Toby a real bad intentioned A suddenly after three seasons of deticated romance with Spencer, they are going to loose alot of viewers..

some of this si wrong toby was the one who made that call it showed clearly at the end of the lady killer episode he made that voice garett dident make that call and toby may not be the real A maybe hes ttrying to help them like member when ian and spencer where fighting in the bell tower??? A maybe toby pushed ian down he was saving spencer!!! and when toby made that call to emily! he was actually giving her a warning!! to get out before nate comes!!!! so maybe toby is faking to hate the liars so he can track the A team down!!!!!!

This post is all wrong!! Bryan Holdman (a PLL writer) has confirmed on Twitter that NATE shot Caleb in his dying breaths. Plus, Marlene King stated in a new interview that Toby has no more good intentions and the producer Oliver Goldstick said he’s probably a real ‘A’, still angry from when he was blackmailed and framed for Alie’s murder while the girls didnt help him. AND no way Garrett made that call. He was with Spencer’s mom!! It was ‘A’. If you listened to the scene between Mona and Toby, Mona was saying how they were trying to get him out of jail anyway that night. So they owe Emily one for proving Nate was the killer and getting Garrett out of jail for them.

Toby or Mona made the call because they had to pull Garrett out of jail but they had a huge tough plan, and Emily got him out of jail easily.

You aren’t really thinking any of this through. Research a little because these answers are not hard to find. Granted, I don’t know them for sure.. But clearly you haven’t been reading the Internet.

1. Yes. Toby really is on the A Team. When asked if Toby had any good intentions in an interview, Marlene King simply said, “No.” Plus, he has plenty of motive, what with the girls not having stood up for him when he took the fall for The Jenna Thing.
2. Linden (or Nate) shot Caleb. He was still moving, and it was confirmed by a writer of the show.
3. I really doubt Caleb is dead. The promo isn’t exactly clear on who Hanna is kissing, but it wouldn’t make sense to kill him off.
4. I don’t think Linden killed Maya. If “Maya Knew,” then why would it have been Linden? Linden is not concerned about Alison’s murder.
5. No. He did not have enough time for that. He was with Spencer’s mom RIGHT after they had the call. I doubt she would be okay with him making a creepy call to her daughter’s best friend. That’s apart from the fact that the chances of him getting a voice translator during all that are very slim.

1. The writters of PLL have confirmed toby isn’t as nice as we want him to be so he is really in the A team. 2. The writters confirmed it was nate that shot caleb. 5. Garret was with spencers mum the time the phone call was received. Very doubtfull it was him as the second they hung up he appread in coming out of the lift.

I don’t think Garret called Emily. I think it was Mona. They were trying to set Paige up so Garret could get out of jail, but since Nate killed Maya, it was better off that way. So, it was either Toby or Mona who called Emily. The same person also called Emily when she was in the cabin, Garret didn’t do that I’m sure. He wouldn’t have known.

I think that Toby is definitely a new member of the A team and I think that is just trying to get the answers that Spencer wasn’t giving him. Although Spencer is NOT going to be happy when she finds out he is part of the A team. I wonder how long she will be in the dark about him being part of the A team. And if he’s pretending what is up with these girls boyfriends pretending to be A?? First Caleb and now (hopefully) Toby!!!

I agree with ishivi… Toby makes so much sense. It also makes sense of Mona.. I mean, one who is close to Hanna, then one who is close to Spencer? He gets pissed at her when she doesn’t tell him things. Plus, he has more motive then almost anyone else. The girls hurt his step sister, but were meaning it for him. And didn’t Ali tell him it was for him at one point in time? Why wouldn’t he want to bring these girls down? I do believe he loves spencer, but i think his anger is too much. Caleb isn’t dead, he can’t be. If he was it would ruin a lot of things, the girls need him to help them with some things that they aren’t smart enough to do.

#1 Double agent or not, Toby is not the Head A. The one who tormented Ali and set up Mona as the new A. head A seems to employ other As.
#2 Why would Emily shoot Caleb? She just ran to him in fear and relief. She then breaks away, grabs the gun, and shoots? Sorry no. Plus I’m pretty sure you can see them embracing in the far away shot. No, it was “Nate”. He seemed dead, wasn’t, got up, grabbed the gun, fired, and dropped down dead. Typical movie moment.
#3 That just prove she died and came back as a zombie. OK, seriously, Tyler got promoted this season. They wouldn’t do that just to barely feature him, then kill him.
#4 Yes, it was “Nate” but he should have specifically said it. They cut that aprt out apparently. At leats accoridng to the actor.
#5 I’m thinking A. Mona seemed glad “Nate” was gone. Apparently,t he A-Team wanted him out of the way. Perhaps because he could prove Paige didn’t kill Maya (having killed her himself.) Plus, by the looks of it, he was with veronica Hastings the whle time. I doubt she’d be fie with him using a voice modulator to call Emily. Especialyl heading to the hospitla anyway,

Idk but that sure does look like Hannah is kissing Wren in the preview, unless Caleb cut his hair… I hope it’s Caleb!!!!!! I like Wren for Spencer!

Hmm, don’t agree with all of these.

1. I hope it’s not a cop out and that Toby was on the A team from the start. These people are criminal masterminds. They’re not going to suddenly trust Spencer’s boyfriend and let him join. It’s better if he was in on it from the beginning but fell in love with Spencer. That’s why the A team wanted to recruit her!

2. One of the writers said it was Nate on twitter. He was still twitching when they cut to the hug, so he used his last breath to get up and shoot.

4. I don’t think he was the killer. They went out of their way not to say it. And writers were ambiguous about it when asked on twitter. Why would the A team go out of their way to frame Paige to free Garrett if they could have just pointed the finger at the real killer Nate? There was also that message from Mona “Maya knew”. Her death has to be connected to Ali’s. I think he grabbed her, but doubt he killed her. A had Maya’s purse (which she was wearing in the surveillance video so it wasn’t in her bigger bag in the cabin)!

5. Where would Garrett have gotten a voice scrambler in the court house. He was released like five minutes before they got the call. I think that was Toby (who also warned Emily to get out and away from Nate) or another A.

But why was Garrett released? He was linked directly to Ali’s murder with the autopsy page, not Mayas, so how is proof that he didn’t kill Maya take away the fact that he could have still killed Ali?

Garret was being held accounted for the murder of Alison and Maya. When it was proven he didn’t murder Alison because of the evidence Spencer and Jason found, he was still held in jail for being the accused murder of Maya. However, when it was discovered that Nate was the one who really killed Maya, that made Garret completely innocent.

The betrayal was Amazing!! But i disagree with a few things…
First: It is too obvious that toby is a bad boy, so he isn’t… He is probably on the A team to discover how to ter them down but it could be that there are two teams… mona take a phonecall and “change of plans”…
Secons: tht call to emily… It was spencer’s sister. He couldn’t because he was with spencer’s mom

Toby makes A LOT of sense when it comes to being on the “A” Team. He definitely has the motive, but beyond that, there’s a lot of things that add up when you look back at the previous clues and things that happened that point to Toby.

For starters, he isn’t always around. So while he says he’s in another town working, he could easily just be working for the Big “A”. For instance, was he the one who caused the car accident in the case of Caleb’s mom?

Beyond that, Toby is…

- pretty eyes.
- the one to massage Emily in the spa.
- the one who out of the blue found Dr. Sullivan at the end of Season 2
- is likely the one to save Spencer from Ian in the Season 1 finale and was strong enough to move Ian’s body.

Remember when Spencer lost that flash drive of all the videos from the NAT Club in the Church in Season 1? And remember when Ashley’s pastor boyfriend found it? Now think back, remember when Toby went with Hanna to the church for that party? He probably planted the flash drive there! It would make sense he still had it if he was the one who saved Spencer in Season 1.

There are also clues, like when Spencer was tutoring Toby in French in Season 1. There was once a closing scene where “A” was listening to a French recording.

Then throughout Season 3 we have those closing scenes where “A” was looking for apartments and all that stuff. Obviously, that was Toby!

I think he’s been apart of the “A” Team from the start.

Not too mention season 2 premire when all the girls where acting like they were all mad at eachother, and Spencer was avoiding Toby he was PISSED. At the end of that episode they tricked A into meeting them, so the only time they’ve sucessfully tricked A was when Toby was kept out of the loop.

I like this…very well said. i think you are right..just the Spencer and Toby couple is my fav. and I hate to see it go away. I was socked to my core when I seen Toby’s face under the black hoodie, however i am waiting for more.

TThere’s one thing about Toby being “A” that I don’t understand. “A” tampered with Toby’s scaffolding, causing Toby to fall & break his arm. Also, “A” made Spencer break up with Toby & Toby was devastated.

I know what everyone is saying…some I agree with and some I dont. We can all sit here and try to wrap our brains around it all day long, all week or all month long, but the fact of the matter is right now Toby (as much as I hate it) is a part of the “A” team. It is making good media for the show which I am sure they knew it would, and lets not forget that Spencer made a huge committment to Toby. I am looking forward to what comes next. However in my own wish I hope that Toby is just trying to bring down “A”!
