Money, marriage & MacLaine! Get the scoop on the Crawleys’ major drama to come.

We’ve seen brief clips and we’ve heard plenty of rumors, but now that the first official trailer for the third season of Downton Abbey has hit the web, we finally have a concrete look at what’s in store — and it’s looking pretty grim. The Crawleys have some serious drama coming their way, both familial and financial; Oh, and did I mention Shirley MacLaine?

1. Trouble in paradise: Fans of Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew (Dan Stevens) probably won’t enjoy how much the couple fights in this new trailer, especially when Mary suggests they “back away now” before things get worse. But before you mourn their marriage, remember we posted photos of the cast filming Mary and Matthew’s nuptials back in March. (So… yay!)

2. Blue-collar Crawleys: The trailer also finds the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) losing his s**t during a tense chat with the Crawley family accountant. “Are you really telling me that the money is all gone?” he asks. Ruh-roh!

3. Sybil’s back: We all shed a tear when Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) left Downton with Tom (Allen Leech) last season, but her little Irish gentleman’s presence in the trailer gives me hope they’ll both be coming home soon. And it looks like Tom comes baring advice for Matthew: “You won’t be happy with anyone else while Lady Mary walks the earth.” Preach!

4. Love behind bars: If you thought a little thing like “prison” would keep Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Mister Bates (Brendan Coyle) apart, you’ve got another thing coming. (Also, I still giggle every time I write “Mister Bates.”)

Watch the trailer for Downton Abbey‘s third season below, then drop me a comment with your hopes, fears and predictions:

Downton Abbey‘s third season premieres in September on ITV and in Jan. 2013 for U.S. viewers.

Yes, she IS calling him “Mister Bates” not master. It probably sounds like master because of her accent, but she is indeed calling him mister. Master would be an inappropriate title for someone in his station.

Downton is flawless. There is nothing on TV that can qualify as a close second. The acting is “marvelous”, the drama is compelling, the costumes and setting are transporting. I simply cannot wait for the third season. Having said all that, if the writers decide to pull an American soap opera stunt and break up Matthew and Mary, the pain will simply be too much, and I will stop watching.

Well,Matthew and Mary will always quarrell but they always end up loving each other more.Matthew is so in love with Mary that what Tom advised him is very true.Their arguments just serve as a catalysts that makes their chemistry so intense.I think Mary’s defiance turns Matthew on.But can’t wait for their wedding day and see Lady Mary so gorgeous in her wedding gown. Wishing Michelle to win the best actress at the emmy’s.She sure deserved the award for all her fantastic performance.

I am one of a few that feels that Matthew and Sybil had the best chemistry. Mary and Matthew’s chemistry was forced.
