A ‘Dark Knight Rises’ shooting victim gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the same hospital where her husband lay unconscious after being shot in the head. He lost an eye, and faces up to millions of dollars in medical bills. Read their bittersweet story.
Katie Medley, 21, experienced a miracle amongst so much sadness — her baby boy, Hugo Jackson Medley, arrived healthy on July 24, just days after she survived the horrific shooting at a Denver-area movie theater. But the baby’s father, Caleb Medley, 23, remains unconscious in the same hospital, with gunshot wounds to the head, a missing eye, and brain damage.
He has undergone three surgeries since the shooting massacre on July 20, during which alleged gunman James Holmes opened fire to a crowded movie theater, killing 12 and injuring 58 others.
Although Caleb is showing signs of improvement, he still faces up to reportedly $2 million in medical expenses, according to the Daily Mail, because the young family does not have health insurance.
Friends have set up a fundraising website in order to pay for Caleb’s medical bills, and they have so far raised more than $200,000, almost halfway to their goal of $500,000.
Katie, who was already scheduled to go into labor on July 23, moved hospitals to be close to her husband.
The young married couple went to the midnight premier of The Dark Knight Rises as a last date before their baby arrived. Katie’s father, David Sanchez, said the couple had been looking forward to the premier for a year.
While Katie hold on to her miracle baby, she is still waiting for her husband to recover. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.
