It’s official! Mariah has signed on to judge season 12 of American Idol, says Fox! Read on to find out all the details!
Mariah Carey will serve as a judge on season 12 of Fox’s American Idol — set to premiere in 2013! Will she earn the reported $18 million for her inaugural season — and where does this leave Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez?
“It’s the biggest recording artist than any of these [singing competition] shows have ever had,” Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly told critics at their press tour in Beverly Hills on Monday July 23. “It’s an artist many of these contestants have tried to emulate. [The deal] only concluded only hours ago. Not being the only game in town we need to keep things fresh.”
Remember, we told you first! Mariah, 42, will reportedly receive a salary of more than $18 million for the season, setting a record for talent on a reality series!
With Mariah on board, it’s highly unlikely Jennifer will be asked to return as Fox won’t pay for two high-priced female vocalists.
“I think I can say it’s 100 percent that Jennifer won’t be back on the show,” Kevin said.
Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who is not involved in judges talk, added, “I was really upset to hear of Steven [Tyler] leaving us and the possibility of Jennifer leaving us. She did say ’99 percent.’ Strange thing to say, ’99 percent.’ You’re either leaving or not leaving. I’m hoping she’s not leaving.”
Randy, who was reported to be stepping down to a mentoring role, will most likely stay on board with the addition of Mariah — Randy is Mariah’s manager.
Mariah tweeted, “It’s gonna be so much fun working on American Idol. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM! — MC.”
What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Is Mariah a good addition for Idol?

The thing is, you can’t get new judges on a show like American idol. It becomes and entirely different show and I’m not sure if I’ll watch it this year.
