As Suri settles into her new life in New York, Katie is making sure that her daughter, who is used to living in luxury and exclusivity under Tom’s watch, gets back to a more grounded upbringing.
No more homeschooling and private jets — with mom Katie Holmes, Suri Cruise, 6, is enjoying a little more modesty these days. Although dad Tom Cruise preferred Suri to be shielded from the public and stay close to his mansion, Katie is giving the six-year-old the more normal childhood she deserves.
Living in sprawling mansions across the world and flying on private planes might seem like a dream life, but for Suri Cruise, being surrounded by adults and isolated from other children was boring — and unhealthy.
Katie wants to make sure that her only daughter has a more normal childhood, and feels Suri deserves to experience a life of love and happiness, rather than wealth.
Suri and her mom recently moved into their new apartment in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, choosing to make the Big Apple their home base. Although the luxury apartment costs $12,000 a month in rent in one of the city’s nicest buildings, its three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths are a far cry from the $35 million seven-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot mansion they shared with Tom.
Tom and Katie also had several other lavish estates across the globe: a six-bedroom home in Essex, England, and a ski house in Tellurade, Co. But Suri would rather spend time with her mom and other kids than feel controlled under Tom’s watch.
On a July 5 outing to the Children’s Museum of the Arts in NYC, the mother-daughter duo enjoyed the day out like any other loving family. “The girls walked down the sidewalk, rather than pulling up right outside the museum,” an eye-witness at the museum told OK! magazine. Suri was also spotted having a play date at Alice’s Tea Cup that same day, hanging out with more age-appropriate pals.
Despite swarms of followers and paparazzi in public, Katie insists on taking Suri to everyday kid activities. They enjoyed a day at Central Park Zoo on July 11, and grocery shopped at Whole Foods on July 4 for barbecue supplies.
Suri will attend private school in the fall with other kids — a much different experience than the sheltered home-schooling she’s used to. But by trading private helicopters in favor of taxi cabs, Katie Holmes is looking out for her daughter, and hopes that she can enjoy as normal of a childhood as is possible.
