The fitness club has changed its policies after being slammed with a lawsuit by the two fathers who were banned from the premises when they tried to take their son to the swimming pool.
Outrage was sparked after Will Trinkle and Juan Granados were banned from their Roanoke athletic club because they weren’t considered a “real” family as gay parents. After a lawsuit and more than 150,000 signatures in a Change.org petition, the club now offers “household” membership instead of “family” membership.
The new policy change is on their official Facebook page:
“A household consists of a primary member and up to one additional household member that permanently lives in the household, and any of their dependent children under the age of 22 who also reside in the household on a permanent basis…Club dues will not change; dues for the Household Membership will be the same as the Family Membership it is replacing.”
Will, 54, described the experience as being “punched in the stomach.” He continued, “It’s from a place we couldn’t imagine that there would be this kind of discrimination and this kind of attack. We have come a long way but this shows we still have a long way to go.”
A Change.org petition in support of Will and Juan, 40, drew more than 150,000 signatures in a 48-hour period.
