Amber Portwood's Baby Leah Is On Food Stamps — Report

Amber Portwood Baby Food Stamps

Now that Amber is behind bars, baby daddy Gary Shirley has to provide for their daughter, Leah. However, a new report says he’s doing a questionable job, spending all his reality TV money on cars and booze, meaning he’s feeding his baby with food bought from food stamps!

Amber Portwood might not win mother of the year now that she’s serving her five-year prison sentence, but her ex-boyfriend Gary Shirley is also finding it difficult to provide for their daughter, Leah, too. Leah is allegedly surviving on junk food like sugary cereals and Twinkies bought with food stamps!

According to Reality Weekly, Gary — who has full custody of 3-year-old Leah — has quit his job as a home health care provider and used all this money he earned from Teen Mom appearances.

Gary allegedly made six figures on the show, but according to a source, he “spent it faster than he made it.” The report says Gary has used his money on cars, a huge flat-screen television, and buying drinks for his friends.

However, this heavy spending has nearly bankrupt Gary, and is now on food stamps. The report says Leah lives with Gary’s mom, Carol, and Gary helps support his daughter with his unemployment benefits but is “too lazy to go back to getting a real job,” continued the source.

The source, who happens to be Gary’s friend, told the magazine: “Gary is a food addict…He’ll use his food stamps to buy Twinkies and hot dogs and sugary cereals.”

Meghan, as a former cashier for a large grocery chain for several years I can tell you that food stamps are abused. Over 90% of the customers purchased junk food or prepackaged food for their kids that they were too lazy to make. You are one of the very few that actually use if for it’s intended use. Most people either buy artificial and processed food or buy very expensive food such as steaks, lobster and then drive away in a Lexus while wearing designer clothing. Sorry food stamps are being cast in a negative light but the majority of folks using them take advantage of the system and are lazy.

I would pay these people to get sterilized. Its not the fact that he or she is feeding the child with food stamps. Who cares?! People do what they have to do. Its the fact that both of them are total mouth-breathing idiots. I don’t think there is a viable brain cell between the two of them. Neither of them have any business making or taking care of children! Seriously! Thank God grandma is there to take care of that poor little girl. Bless them both.

Ok, I receive food stamps. I feed my children healthy meals. Not all of what I get on my food stamps is junk food. This is a highly judgemental statement that junk food is the only thing bought with food stamps…

I never liked gary or amber. It’s a shame that poor child is going to be stuffed with junk food and be stuck with grandma while moms in prison and dads out partying. hopefully someone interjects before she becomes a statistic in childhood obesity.

Gary is a p.o.s, he is fat, lazy, unmotivated, and a bad dad. I used to work with him and he is so much worse than they portray him on television. His mother basically raises his daughter while he goes out and parties with his friends. To the poster who said you can’t buy those foods on food stamps…well..you don’t know what you’re talking about. That’s all most people on food stamps buy.

Who the hell refers to cereal as”sugary cereals”? Anyone with a brain knows 99% of cereal is nothing but sugar. You don’t call soda sugary soda or candy bars sugary candy bars! Methinks someone is either over-exaggerating or flat out lying.

This story is so false. Food stamps can only be used for certain items.

Not true. You can buy anything but hot food, alcohol, and diet/sports drinks with food stamps. Cereal and Twinkies are allowed. Well, in this state anyway.

Okay if he QUIT his job he wouldnt have unemployment OR foodstamps! So I find this artical hard to believe. And as a single mother FROM INDIANA I can say I understand how hard it is to work and be able to pay for childcare when not recieving childsupport, I might as well not work! I bring home 400$ a week and spend 230$ a week on childcare! SO the whole idea of being TO LAZY TO FIND A JOB is rediculous hes probably having a hard time finding a job that will pay enough to take care of bills and still have Leah in daycare!

You are wrong. I am a caseworker in another state, and it doesn’t matter if you quit your job, you can get food stamps as long as you are under the income limit. As for UC, his employer could have taken his request to leave and said he was laid off so that he could collect UC. Some employers will do that for a single parent. However, I agree, he is probably just having a hard time finding a job.

@Sharon, that’s not true. If you quit your job, you lose almost and help to financial aid

I’m guessing states have different regulations. My sister just had a baby and her husband lost his job. At the time, she was a stay at home mom. She was accepted to receive them.

If people spent more time actually taking care of their children, they wouldn’t have to worry about daycare costs.

In one of the first few episodes Amber admits she didn’t want to be a mom and never wanted kids. She was basically ranting on about how she didn’t want Leah, wish it hadn’t happened etc. So I don’t see why she didn’t give Leah up to give her a better life. This is what happens when people didn’t want kids have kids and can’t afford them and don’t know how to raise them or don’t even try to raise them well. It’s just sad because this poor girl deserves a better life and I think she was just being selfish and only kept her to be on MTV. Which is really sad. Leah deserves to be put up for adoption into a loving, STABLE, nurturing home who she can have all the things in life and more with loving, caring, supportive parents. Leah is going to end up on a real bad path as she gets older for being in such an unstable destructive home environment.

What? Give Leah up to a better home and have Amber miss any chance of using the tot to make money off of her? Are you crazy? :|

You have to understand, that is not an easy choice to make. Even if you don’t want them, you fall in love the moment you see them and cannot bear to see them go away. That’s why Catelynn didn’t even want to look at Carlie after birtb

Amber is such an idiot for having sex, as 4 Gary, he stuck his d in her v! Even Tyler did the same thing to Catelynn, and see the difference in ppl and their parenting skills.

Okay i do see your point, However, I’m not sure if she got pregnant to be on MTV? The odds of a teen mom getting the oppportunity to appear on the show would be slim to none. Also, just because you are raised in a bad enviroment does NOT mean you will make bad decisions as an adult. I for that matter know. My mother had me at 15, drug addict, watched her get abused, and then taken away multiple times. Did i go down the same path? No. We all choose our paths. We all can change the cycle. I do believe that when children are exposed to that enviroment; we have more mountains to climb. However, the climb, I think is more rewarding than those who did not have the same battles.
