Stephanie Decker became a national hero after she flung her body over her two children as a deadly tornado destroyed her house, losing her legs as a result. Now she walks — and dances — for the first time on ‘Ellen’.
They told her it would be a year before she could walk again, and on the May 24 broadcast of The Ellen Degeneres Show, the mom of two walked and danced for the first time, only TWO months after losing her legs.
Stephanie Decker, 37, recalled how she saved her kids, Dominic, 8, and Reese, 5, from the monstrous tornado. She took them into the basement, wrapped her kids in a blanket, and laid on top of them as she saw her house crumbling down.
She was crushed under the weight, and the pain she felt on her legs was “excruciating, like a blow torch” but she couldn’t display that pain to her kids.
Her legs were gone. Her lung punctured. But she kept going on.
“Losing my legs meant nothing in comparison to what I still had,” she said in the interview. Miraculously, her children were unharmed.
Then it was her son’s time to be the hero, as he crawled from underneath and dashed to a neighbor’s house for help. Help soon came, and the mother was rushed to the hospital.
After the horrific accident, the “Hero Mom” as she is now affectionately dubbed, spent the next two months making an amazing recovery. She has been able to maintain her sense of humor, even recalling how she said “There goes pedicures” to her son as she was loaded into the ambulance.
Now attached with prosthetics, she stepped on the stage, walked, and danced for the first time.
