Mother Jail Release

Two children were found living in an old school bus while their parents were in prison. But now that the mom is out, she fixed the bus and is seeking to regain custody!

Sherrie Shorten of Splendora, Texas, is in the process of removing her five-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter from foster care after a postal worker reported their poor living conditions with no adult supervision back in March.

The once battered and unlivable school bus that served as a temporary home for the children is now renovated and equipped with a working bathroom, beds for her and the children, a computer and a television, the Houston Chronicle reports.

“We talked for the first time on the phone last night,” Sherrie said. “They were very excited and happy to hear my voice. They know we still love them and care about them. They are okay with foster care, but they miss us.”

The father, Mark Shorten, is still in prison. He has said that he never intended for the bus to be permanent; they planned to build a house after saving money!

“I’m going to do everything I can to make my family whole again,” Sherrie insisted.

Her case will be heard on May 2.
