Khloe – You witnessed first hand how incredibly freaked out Lamar was after being dumped by the LA Lakers. It was like he was being abandoned by his “family” – You can’t ever do that to him!
It’s amazing that Lamar Odom let the ‘Khloe & Lamar‘ TV cameras in on how deeply hurt he felt after being tossed off his beloved LA Lakers.
On last night’s (April 22nd) episode of ‘Khloe & Lamar’, the once confident basketball star admits to a serious case of nervous stomach and even begins to cry, when he has to return to his old home – the Staples Center in LA- to face off against the Lakers in one of his very first games for the Dallas Mavericks.
Lamar was abandoned by his father when he was a young child, then his mom died and finally the grandmother who raised him died when he was just a teenager. He grew up suffering from one abandonment after another. Clearly, he felt like the Lakers, where he was part of the team for seven years, became his surrogate family. That’s why when he was unexpectedly traded away to the Dallas Mavericks, it was for more than just a business deal. Lots of sports stars are traded every year from team to team and yes, it’s just business as usual, but not for Lamar with his abandonment issues.
That’s why it’s so critical, Khloe, that you are there for your husband, even if he’s tried to push you away or blame you now for losing his Dallas Mavericks job.
You may not have realized it at the time when Lamar proposed to you, but I bet he was almost as in love with your family as you. He NEVER had a real family growing up. You certainly have one that’s more than big enough for the both of you.
Now, it’s true that the filming of ‘Khloe & Lamar’ may have distracted Lamar from focusing on playing for the Dallas Mavericks, but it also may be that he was deeply mourning the loss of his first real family, the Lakers, and there’s no way he can pin that distraction on you.
You certainly were focused on his feelings in last night’s episode. And you do very clearly realize that you are married to an intensely sensitive man. Lamar Odom may be a 6’10″ athlete, but inside he’s a vulnerable and needy little boy still, and you do understand that.
“I’m having a minor panic attack,” you say while waiting for the Lakers vs. Mavericks game to start at the Staples Center. “But it’s not about me. It’s about Lamar and I know he has enough nerves and anxiety for the both of us.”
Lamar admits his stomach is rumbling and “I’m damn nervous,” before the big, traumatic game. He even breaks into tears when Kris Jenner comes by backstage to wish him good luck.
This is a man who is deeply vulnerable when he is let down by loved ones. Earlier in the episode his best friend Jamie also hurts his feelings when he makes it seem like he misses the VIP perks of being Lamar’s friend more than Lamar himself, now that Lamar has moved to Dallas.
And Khloe, you stepped in and protected Lamar, telling Jamie face to face that he had hurt Lamar’s feelings.
Thankfully by the end of the episode Jamie called Lamar to apologize and to tell him he would be his friend forever, even if Lamar was “a janitor.”
Then in the thrill of a lifetime for Lamar, he got a standing ovation from the Lakers fans, a welcome back sign on the JumboTron and a video of his Laker’s career highlights.
Khloe, you said: “I am so happy for Lamar. It’s like a thank you for all the hard work and gratitude for the years you gave us.” And as for Lamar, he said, it “made me want to perform.”
Sadly, Lamar didn’t keep that momentum up after this episode. Khloe, I guess one standing ovation and a video couldn’t make up for all his deep seated hurt.
But that’s all the more reason, why you need to keep standing by Lamar, whether he’s ever an NBA star again or becomes a janitor. That’s what marriage is all about and only your unconditional love can save Lamar.
