Jennifer was the first witness called to testify in the trial of the man accused of killing her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in October 2008.
Jennifer Hudson took the stand on April 23 on day one of the trial against William Balfour, the estranged husband of her sister Julia.
The Oscar winner was on the prosecutor’s list of potential people to give testimony, Eonline reports. But they shockingly opened the trial by calling Jennifer to the stand.
Her voice trembled as she told the jury how she warned her sister not to marry William.
“I told her over and over again to not marry him,” Hudson said, voice trembling, on the stand. “We did not like how he treated her.”
Tears streamed down her face as she recalled the last time she saw her mother, brother and nephew when they paid her a surprise visit just one week before they were killed.
“That was the last time I saw them,” she said. “Thank God I had the opportunity.”
William is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jennifer’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, as well as the singer’s 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson and 7-year-old nephew Julian King.
He is also charged with home invasion, aggravated kidnapping, residential burglary and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
