'The Voice' Recap: Christina & Blake Send 2 Contestants Packing

Do you think the right contestants were sent home? Read our full recap & tell us!

The Voice‘s live shows continued April 16 — but with a twist! Both Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton had to eliminate one member from each of their teams at the end of the night even before America even got a chance to vote.

Raelynn, the crown jewel of Blake’s team, opened the show and was once again impressive; She’s definitely the one to beat. Then Erin Willet took on Adele, but didn’t quite hit it out of the park. This was the second time someone took on the Grammy Award-winning singer, and I have to say I think her songs should be banned. They sound completely off when someone else sings them. Fortunately, Jermaine Paul closed out the performances for Team Blake, and he was definitely my favorite of the night.

From Christina’s team, Jesse Campbell took the stage first. He was followed by Ashley De La Rosa, who unfortunately wasn’t any better than the week before. The coaches thought she did a good job, but I found her performance to be a bit forgettable. Lindsey Pavao took on Katy Perry, and while she tried to make the song a bit more rock, the performance totally died out in the verses and her pitch was off. This was something Adam Levine pointed out, but didn’t want to criticize, since he has his pitch problems of his own. Chris Mann was the last of the night, but like Adam, I felt his performance of “Viva La Vida,” was odd.

Christina took the stage with her and her team for her first group performance this season, and although she looked a bit stiff in her leotard and heels, the performance was decent. She also had male strippers surround Blake and throw dollar bills at him, which was amazing after several episodes of hearing him complain about the male dancers on stage with the female contestants. The night also included a performance by Team Blake, as well as a song by Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa.

When it finally came down to elimination time the options weren’t as hard, but they were definitely shocking. Christina sent fan-favorite Jesse home, which I still don’t understand, and Blake sent Jordis Unga packing. Tomorrow night, two more will be eliminated and two will remain on each team.

Do you think Jesse and Jordis were the right contestants to go? Drop a comment with your thoughts on tonight’s shocking eliminations!

As I read these comments about “growth” and “improvement” I’m puzzled. The VOICE is about talent!! It’s not Singing l0l; they aren’t accepting marginal talent to showcase what they “can do with it!” C’mon!!! Nobody seems to know what it’s about anymore. Are we to watch bad singers become good singers under the tutelage of the stars? OR are the judges actually choosing great talent, yet undiscovered, to showcase and prime for a career launch. I guess I’m confused now….and far less interested.

Some of the critics of Jessie (too old or can’t sing), obviously have never heard of Sam Cooke or Donny Hathaway or Peabo Bryson. Hell, even Luther Vandross (not a super fan, but he can sing). A unique resonance in the “voice” that is capable of singing anything. That is singer!! Every single contestant on the voice is one dimensional, except Jessie. And, for those talking about he couldn’t sell albums because of age, etc. These people are likely children themselves, get real. Christina is obviously smoking something, or she’s keeping Jessie out of contract to produce him herself.Either way voting Jessie of was an enormous injustice.

I am appalled and feel like a fool for actually interacting with this program. I think Christina definitely has a “mean streak”. Either that they are all told what to do (she did say “I’ve given this a lot of thought”) so much for the “surprise” game change of elimination. Either way the show has lost all credibility or humanity. It was one of the few shows that actually projected a genuine respectfulness for the contestants – that’s out the window. Particularly hurtful to boot Jesse after all the kudos for his dedication of the song to his daughter and the letting him build that stage to her…then, the boot. Christina’s “sincerity” is a complete joke. Maybe those bras and dresses that are at least 4 sizes too small are squeezing the blood flow to her pre-frontal cortex! At the very least they are showing her for who she really is!

Christina was choosing based on GROWTH, not just talent. If Jesse had GROWN, and DESERVED to move on, he WOULD HAVE. I’m not saying his not great, he’s amazing, but he didn’t IMPROVE, and that’s what the voice has to be able to do.

Actually the name of the competition is “The Voice”. I think to most, that means they are looking for the best “Voice” , not the best “Growth”. Last year’s winner Javier Colon was clearly the best “Voice” of that season, he didn’t need to “Grow” he just needed exposure. Jesse is a similar talent to Javier and clearly one of the best “Voices” of this season. No, this was a huge mistake by Christina, she just gave away her best shot to win, while robbing the fans of future great performances by Jesse.

Bull crap! There was obviously some behind the scenes tension or this wouldn’t have happened. I suspect Xtina was a bit intimidated by his confidence and or talent. Hopefully he will go on to great things but as for me; this show has lost all credibility. She didn’t leave it up to the voting public and that was simply wrong.

The show is called THE VOICE not The Growth. He didnt grow because he didnt need to he was already the best, and it is pretty easy to grow when you have SOOO much that you need to work on Jesse had very little if anything he needed to work on

Funny, I thought it was about the most talented. Why would you send home someone with talent in favor of someone who still needs to mature and grow? Didn’t improve – for heavens sakes he was already amazing. So if Adele was a contestant, if she sang the same after 3 shows as she did the first one (incredible) she would deserve to go? What an odd premise for a show.

If Jessie is so talented, then he does not need to win the voice to be successful. Didn’t Jennifer Hudson lose American Idol and then go on to win an Academy Award?

I’ve only seen a few comments on here that noticed what I did – Christina has an excellent ear for music. She eliminated Jesse based on her gut – because he wasn’t unique. Last year, everyone thought Javier was the one to beat, the best – and where is he now? Plus, Jesse does not have the versatility that Javier did. Christina gave all of them songs that were not in their “genres”. Because a good singer – a Voice – can make good out of any genre. Halo is a difficult song to sing – but he also could have done what Lindsay did and ask for a song change if he felt he wasn’t up to it.
As far as Jesse being the Voice the winner – Lindsay’s songs have charted higher than anyone on itunes, except maybe Juliet – and Raelynn charted quite high after her performance the week she was voted in. Jermaine, on the other hand, has a very expressive voice – very powerful. I was quite impressed.
Who would I vote for if Jesse and Jordis had not been eliminated? I would be voting for Lindsay, RaeLynn, Chris and Jermaine. Not everyone would have thought Jesse was “the Voice”.

Well i guess you were wrong because last night Raelynn was kicked off and Lindsay was on the bottom so America must not like them as much as you say the only thing i do agree with you on is that xtina does have a good ear for talent which is why when she kicked jesse off she said NOTHING about his singing at all she just said some bs about her gut feeling bottom line she could say Nothing about his voice because she knows it was the best

christina was spot on. Jesse is talented–no doubt about it. but I’m sorry…there is no real place for him in the music industry. he’s too old become the next big star. they want a moneymaker who can SELL RECORDS. if he did “win” the voice he’d end up getting lost in the R&B sea with younger talent like neo drake and usher.

Jesse should have read the name of the show — THE VOICE — before wasting his time in having a great voice.

He should have also heeded the disclaimer that Kady holds dear which says that he is too old to become the next big star.

Personally, had I known this show was simply for finding the next great young hip-hop artist (Neo, Drake and Usher), I would have not bothered.

Kady, because of insight like yours, we do need television that can cater to your specific needs. It should air between Jerry and Maury.

Totally wrong choice with Jesse. Week after week we fast forward through Chris’ songs because while talented, he is not enjoyable to listen to. Bad choice with that one. I agree with Jordis. I also can’t help but wonder if something else were at play? Does Jesse already have a recording deal offer? Also, I like CA, but thought she took way too much of the spotlight in the group performance. She could have taken a cue from Blake and let her team shine.

Christina made the right choice. Jesse’s performance was weak and off-pitch at times. He is not versatile. He is also too similar to Javier and I think Christina knew that ultimately the public would want to see a different style in the winner’s seat. She could also see that he is similar to Jermaine BUT Jermaine is BETTER. Why would she want to go head to head with that? Better to take her team in a different direction.

However, I do think Blake made the wrong choice to eliminate Jordis. Erin should have gone. BAN Adele songs……

Christina is a loser, she only wants the show to be about herself she dont care about the contestants. If this show is called the Voice, Jesse has every right to be there. come on, they kept Raelynn because she’s a young version on Blake’s wife, he was asking her if she had a boyfriend. like what is this about. totally loosing viewers. Vote Christina off, eliminate Christina and Blake. Like be real about the Voice.

I’m not saying Jesse would have won it all. But she should have let him stay and let America decide when he needed to be voted off. Her team has no strong vocal talent, and I garauntee that one of those girls is going home on her team tonight. At the moment Cee Lo and Adam have the winning contestant and possibly Blakes guy.

Grow up. It has nothing to do with other singers getting more attention. If that were the case she would have eliminated Lindsay Pavao, the most popular member of her team. And just because she actually gave criticism to a contestant as a JUDGE doesn’t mean she’s jealous. That was her honest opinion. Get over it, whiner.

After reading the comments, its not being a hater or a whiner, but he was definately not the worse vocally to be eliminated. we are talking vocally!! — the other judges and even Adam said that he was the one to beat- that says alot about his quality!! he is very much so versatile — if you didnot think that he was then it was her job as a coach to guide and direct him in directions to show that even more. Being honest, based on who was left on HER team, he definately was not the worse to be voted off last nigh. Finalist/Winner or not

This show was about the person with the best voice, not who sells the most on itunes. Somehow it has turned into the very thing that it protested not to be in the beginning, a popularity contest. I get that America made the choice to send Jordis home 2 weeks ago, and truthfully saw the logic in that. But if she was to be judged on her performance from last night I dont think she would have been voted off. As for Jesse Campbell….I can not see the reason for him to be gone when there are others left in the competition with far less vocal ability than him. This is not a dig at Christina or Blake so dont feel the need to jump in and shove your opinion down my throat, Im pretty steadfast in mine that the show lost some integrity last night. They should be ashamed at changing the rules in the middle of the game and allowing personal opinions of the judges at this stage to determine the remaining contestants. T
