Selena Gomez’s ‘Spring Breakers’ stand in, Lauren Vera, gives HollywoodLife.com an inside look at what it’s like to be on the hottest movie set of the spring!
Ever since Selena Gomez became famous on the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, Lauren Vera has been told she’s the spitting image of the gorgeous starlet. An aspiring actress herself, Lauren, 19, knew she had to jump at the opportunity to spend six weeks on the set of the hot indie film, Spring Breakers as Selena’s stand in on set.
HL: How did this opportunity come about?
LV: I’m an actor myself. The Florida market is nothing like LA, so there aren’t a lot of opportunities. When a huge movie comes, there aren’t opportunities to star in it usually, but you can be a stand in.
HL: What does being a “stand in” entail?
LV: Basically, what happens is the star (like Selena) will go through hair and makeup and wardrobe and I’ll stand in for the lighting team in order for them to practice on me.
HL: Do you look a lot like Selena?
LV: We’re the same size and the same height, which is what they really care about. I’m a little darker mostly because we’ve been hanging out in the sun and I tan super easily.
HL: Before you got this job, did people think you looked like Selena?
LV: That happens all the time! I had an ex-boyfriend who was the first one who told me. He said, ‘There’s this girl on Disney’ (it was when she was on ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’). Ever since she blew up, it’s been non-stop.
HL: So people come up to you thinking you’re her?
LV: Especially since we’ve started shooting and people know she’s in Florida. I’ve gone to the beach and had my sunglasses and I hear people whispering and then someone will say, ‘No, that’s not her she’s too tan!’
HL: Have you always been a Selena fan?
LV: She’s a little under my age, but I always admired her style. I always thought she looked absolutely gorgeous in person too.
HL: What about the other actresses on set? Have you had a chance to get to know them too?
LV: All the girls are really sweet. I’m not trying to say we’re best friends, but I do talk to them a lot. It’ll be like questions about where to stand, or a compliment on my shoes or something. It’s not a lot of crazy interaction.
HL: What’s something you’ve learned about Selena after observing her the past few weeks?
LV: I can tell she loves what she does. I can definitely see it. From one actor to another, I can definitely tell she’s invested in what she does.
HL: We’ve seen so many paparazzi shots and heard about the crazy fans. How does that affect shooting?
LV: It’s bothersome when the fans and the paparazzi are in the way for the crew, but for me, it’s kind of exciting. I think it’s really cool Selena can inspire people that much to stand there for four hours in the hot or the cold.
HL: What is it like watching Ashley, Vanessa and Selena interact?
LV: I can tell the girls are friends. It’s funny because the stand ins are best friends and they are best friends too!
HL: What’s been your most memorable moment so far?
LV: So far, it was on the first day we got to film. There were paparazzi. I came out of the wardrobe trailer with my sunglasses and the same outfit as Selena and they took photos, which went up online for two hours. They actually thought I was Selena!
