Cee Lo bursts into tears while contestants battle it out on The Voice last night, and admits, “I’m in awe of you.”
Cee Lo has remained cool as a cucumber all season on The Voice, while serving as a mentor for his team of young hopefuls, but last night the Gnarls Barkley singer broke down in tears — three times!– during the fifth and final evening of battle rounds.
The 37-year-old softee could barely choke out his words, telling both men: “I’m just in awe of you.” The sentiment was not lost on Tony, who replied, “Bringing tears to Cee Lo’s eyes [is] incredibly humbling.”
Even though Cee Lo manages not to cry when choosing Tony over Justin, his voice got noticeably choked up when he says he’s sorry he had to choose one, revealing it was the “hardest decision” he’s had to make all season.
Cee Lo also broke down in tears during the battle round between James Massone and R&B singer Wade, when the two performed a rendition of Cindy Lauper’s “True Colors.” “This song moves people, that’s what this song is doing right here,” he said. “That song made me cry, man. I’m proud of you all, man. Wow, dude. OK man, OK I surrender.”
“I don’t sing like that. I can’t help but be humbled by it. Final words of advice, live it, love it and just be in the moment.”
Cee Lo eventually chooses James as the winner, though not without leaking a more few tears. “It’s very difficult for me to do this,” he admits. “James, you blew me away, I was so impressed with you. Wade, you know that your talent is inherited and cannot be severed from you. This is a sweet song to me, I’m a sensitive person, I’m an artist.”
