The numbers are in and ‘The Hunger Games’ is a smash! Let the Games begin!
The odds are definitely in The Hunger Games‘ favor! The movie brought in $19.75 million opening night for its midnight showings, according to our sister site Deadline.com, which is the highest number ever for a non-sequel!
While the number doesn’t compare to the $43.5 million that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 brought in, or $30.3 million that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 earned for its midnight showings, critics are more than confident that it will surpass $100 million for opening weekend.
The Hunger Games was bound for success when Fandango sold the most pre-sale tickets EVER. A record that the Fandango Vice President, Rick Butler, issued a statement about.
“The Hunger Games is off to a fantastic start. Yesterday [Feb. 24], we saw the biggest first day advance ticket sales in our company’s nearly 12-year history – which is especially impressive for a March release and a non-sequel,” Fandango vice president and general manager Rick Butler said in a statement, Entertainment Weekly reports. According to EW, the previous record was set by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on May 14, 2010.
The Hunger Games sold over 1 million pre-sale tickets, according to Deadline.com.
