'The Voice' Recap: Erin Willet Chooses To Stay & Battle Gwen Sebastian

Do you think Erin should have left the show to be with her father? Her difficult choice certainly paid off!

The battle rounds continued March 19 on The Voice with a bizarre performance — courtesy of Team Cee Lo Green — and an emotional decision from Erin Willet, whose will to continue in the competition was tested.

Starting off the night were Pip and Nathan Parrett, on Adam Levine‘s team. Singing a tune by the late Amy Winehouse, Pip was worried about over-singing due to his theatrical style, but in the end was deemed more versatile to Adam and won.

The oddest pairing of the night came courtesy of Cee Lo, who had Erin Martin battle rock duo The Shields Brothers. Erin’s quirky voice and over-confidence was swallowed up by the brothers’ loud Wayne’s World persona, as Baby Face put it, but she didn’t let that stop her. Cee Lo chose Erin, adding that her performance was “wondrously strange, bizarre [and] peculiar.” He didn’t have much to work with, in my opinion.

Next up for team Christina Aguilera was 17-year-old Ashley De La Rosa and Usher-sound-alike Jonathas, who were given the ultimate couple song “No Air” by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown. The two weren’t living up to Christina’s expectations in rehearsal, and their final performance didn’t either. Neither Ashley nor Jonathas stood out, but Ashley was the clear favorite among the coaches, so she moved on.

Alicia Keys‘ background singer Jermaine Paul and wannabe pop star AlyX battled it out for another spot on Blake Shelton‘s team. Jermaine held onto an edge that mentor Kelly Clarkson recognized, and that rightfully earned him a place in the live shows.

Adam’s second battle was between singer Angel Taylor and insurance worker Katrina Parker, and while I almost forgot about their performance with all the excitement from the exclusive Snow White and the Huntsman trailer the show featured, it was clear that Katrina should have won. And she did!

Blake paired Erin Willet and Gwen Sebastian for the final battle of the night. The opportunity came with an emotional choice for Erin, whose father is suffering of cancer and was told he didn’t have much time left to live. Erin made the choice to stay in the competition, at her father’s request, and battled for a spot — a battle she won.

Next week the remaining contestants battle it out for the remaining spots on the live shows. Who was your favorite tonight? Did the judges choose right?

Gwen Sebastian was TOTALLY robbed. Erin has a great voice, but were all else equal, Gwen should have taken that round. She carried Erin through the whole song. I don’t really blame Blake. What kind of heartless bastard would vote Erin off after her circumstances? Unless she mostly sucked wind, which she didn’t. Still it’s completely unfair to Gwen. Whatever. Gwen Sebastian will always be a star to her fans.
