Eczema– UGH! As a victim, I can tell you firsthand it’s an inconvenience you’ll battle with everyday for the rest of your life, especially in cold, dry weather ! Fortunately for us, dermatologist Dr. David Colbert weighs in on how to fight this awful itchy skin disease! Plus, shop for products to help you sooth your skin!
Eczema is not a disease that should be taken lightly. Just like any other medical condition, it needs to be treated immediately and properly or you will continue to suffer — and itch!
Eczema is a skin disease that causes really dry, scaly skin to appear on your face, elbows, feet, eyelids, knees, back of your neck or any other area of the skin it decides to take over. The patch of dry skin can be flaky and sometimes even turn brown. It is often caused by the change of moisture in the air a.k.a, when the seasons are changing — like right now, explains Dr. David Colbert, founder of New York Dermatology Group.
“It’s a medical condition like having ammonia. You’re just going to suffer if you haven’t found a treatment,” Dr. Colbert says, adding you can differentiate eczema from regular dry skin just by identifying if it’s a patch of skin or not. ”Dry skin doesn’t localize to one spot,” he says.
So aside from going to the dermatologist, which Dr. Colbert highly recommends, there are at-home remedies that you can do to ease the pain. First step? Stay away from water.
“The more you shower, the more soap you use, the worse your eczema is,” Dr. Colbert says. ”Water is your enemy. Water on your skin is your enemy. Showers should be short, sweet and when you dry yourself, moisturize yourself immediately to seal the water in.”
