What To Wear To A Family Cocktail Party

If you’re meeting your boyfriend’s parents or extended family for the first time at a formal occasion, check out my tips & tricks & SHOP for the perfect get-up.

Meeting the family of the guy you’re dating can be stressful — especially if it’s at a formal occasion! Not only do you have to deal with the stress of meeting a lot of people at once, but you also have to find an outfit that’s appropriate for the setting. If you’re gearing up for a spring cocktail party, you can’t go wrong with a pretty printed dress.

Spring florals are so popular this season, and a print doesn’t look too dressy if you’re heading over to a brunch of affair that starts in the afternoon — it has an effortless look to it that other get-ups might lack. If you’re wearing a dress, you also don’t have to worry about all of the work that goes into finding the perfect blouse or a skirt with the perfect hemline — it’s easy and breezy to throw on!

Take a cue from Shameless star Amy Smart. She was one of the first stars to wear a look from the Banana Republic Mad Men collection — and not only is her frock affordable but it’s also totally wearable for a variety of occasions! Whether you’re heading to work, dinner, or a more formal party, you can easily wear this dress depending on what you pair it with. The floral pattern is definitely ‘in’ for the season but the classic, streamlined silhouette never goes out of style.

I also like this look because it hits at all the right places — you don’t want to give your boyfriend’s family an eyeful or leave a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons!

If you want to get Amy’s look, you can get it here. Personally, I like the way it looks off the shoulder without a big necklace — you don’t want the ensemble to get too busy!
