Seal has no apologies for being so candid about his failed marriage to Heidi Klum.
Seal, 49, says he felt obligated to the public to explain his split with his supermodel wife since the two were open about their marriage in happier times, People reports.
“When you publicize your marriage as much as our marriage was publicized, when you renew wedding vows, when you do all those things, what you are saying to people is…you’re giving people a picture of an ideal relationship that people aspire to,” the singer told the Australian radio show Fifi and Jules earlier this week. (Seal’s currently visiting the Land Down Under for his “Soul 2″ tour and his involvement with its version of The Voice.)
“When it goes south, you can’t all of a sudden take the philosophy of a monk and decide to go for a vow of silence. It doesn’t really work like that,” he continued. “I respect my wife’s decision not to talk about that, but I felt that people at least deserved some kind of explanation why the picture of the ideal wasn’t what they thought it was.”
Although some naysayers feel that the singer’s been vocal about his personal problems only to promote his new album, Seal claims that his recent public appearances on show’s like Ellen and Piers Morgan Tonight were booked months in advance.
“It’s not like this [split] happened and I decided the next week to go on the show,” he defended. “I’ve tried my very best to protect the general welfare of my family, my wife included.”
