Elizabeth and Matthew tied the knot in Hawaii on Feb. 18! We’re so happy for the newlyweds! Congrats!
In an attempt to avoid the hungry media, Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Allan Gilmour decided to keep their nuptials a secret.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Elizabeth told People. “It has been the greatest day I could ever have imagined.”
Elizabeth and Matthew said their “I do'”s in an intimate Mormon ceremony surrounded by only close family and friends on Feb. 18 at Turtle Bay Resort on the luscious Hawaiian island, Oahu.
“Matthew and I are very traditional,” Elizabeth said.
But the pair didn’t just choose Oahu for it’s romantic ambiance, it’s also the place where Elizabeth reunited with her family after months of horror, terror and abuse when she was kidnapped.
“Oahu is a very special place for me, very different than what I was used to,” Elizabeth told People. “I guess you could say it was kind of a refuge.”
It’s hard to believe it was just 10 years ago that Elizabeth was kidnapped from her own bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah by Brian Mitchell David, 58. She was just 14 years old at the time. Nine months later, Elizabeth was miraculously rescued and bravely fought — and later forgave — her kidnapper in court.
Elizabeth truly was given a second chance at life and we’re happy she’s spending it experiencing true love. The now advocate for children’s safety met her 22-year-old husband in Paris, France, in January 2009. He says he knew she was “the one” from the start — even though they started off just being friends.
“I’d known for a long time that I was in love with her,” Matthew said, adding it was her confident attitude that lured him in. “The thing that attracted me the most to her — at the beginning and now — is how confident she is, especially considering everything she has gone through.”
Elizabeth and Matthew’s wedding was perfect in every way. Elizabeth gleamed in a white-laced Alita Graham dress as Matthew wore a kilt. There were Polynesian dancers, flowers all over and even romantic boat ride!
Elizabeth ended the evening reminding everyone how far they’ve come since those dark days in 2002.
“Nine years ago I said I was the luckiest girls in the world,” she said at her wedding. “I definitely feel that way today. Spending my wedding with the people I love the most has been unbelievable. I love you all. Aloha.”
We wish the happy couple and best! This truly is an amazing story!
