In her first interview since getting a double mastectomy, Giuliana opens up about her tough recovery and the road ahead of her.

For the first time since getting a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery on Dec. 13, Giuliana Rancic and her husband Bill Rancic sat down for their first interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show, Dec. 30, to discuss her recovery.

“I feel great,” Giuliana, 37, admitted. “I got to be honest, I feel great considering it’s only been 2.5 weeks. I still have a ways to go concerning the recovery.”

The always positive Giuliana went into surgery with the best of attitudes. “She was cracking jokes, she was in pretty good spirits,” Bill said.

“I said, ‘Alright are we having a party?'” Giuliana added.

But the day after the surgery proved be extremely difficult. “It was hard,” Giuliana confessed. “I knew this was going to be a tough surgery. My gosh it was hell. It was horrible until a week and half ago. ”

After the surgery, Giuliana was afraid to throw up. “I went into surgery at 4 p.m. and got out at 9 p.m.,” she recalled. “At 4 a.m., I had to get off of the morphine because I was so sick. [But] the last thing I wanted to do was throw up — you have to engage your chest muscles.”

But Giuliana is a fighter and took her first steps at the exact time the doctor ordered her to. “The doctor said, ‘By 3 you have to have her walking around,'” explained Bill. “As soon as she got up, she was walking around the hallways, around the hospital.”

Still, Giuliana doesn’t have a ton of mobility back yet. “I can’t really turn much to put my seatbelt on,” she said. “Bill helps me get in and out of bed.”

Giuliana also can’t raise her arms over her head and needs help getting dressed.

But Giuliana will be back to herself as soon as possible. “I had a goal to go back [to work] this week,” she said. “It was nice having a goal. It helps you recover quicker.”
