Lauren Scruggs Accident

The model and blogger, who used to work in the wardrobe department on the ‘Gossip Girl’ set, is dealing with traumatic mutilation after walking into a spinning airplane propellor and losing her hand.

Lauren Scruggs, 23, took a short flight in a two-seater plane across the state of Texas to see Christmas lights on Dec. 3 when she accidentally walked into the spinning propellor at Aero Country Airport. Slashing her face and injuring her left hand so badly it had to be amputated, the model, blogger and former wardrobe stylist on Gossip Girl is currently dealing with the aftermath of the horrific accident.

Lauren sustained severe head and shoulder injuries, according to a spokesperson for the family, when she turned to thank the pilot and was caught in the spinning blade. Her left hand was severed, she suffered a skull fracture, brain injury and could lose her left eye.

“After exiting a propeller plane, an accident occurred where she walked into the front of the prop,” the spokesperson posted on the website, Caring Bridge. “Struck on the left side of her body, Lauren’s hand, head, and shoulder area were hit.”

The latest update from Monday afternoon said that Lauren was recovering from a slew of emergency operations — and the chances of Lauren ever seeing out of her left eye are still unknown. “Lauren’s surgery went very well this morning,” the statement read. “She is now resting in ICU with the family. She is able to open her right eye to see while her left eye is still bandaged. Please continue to pray for the vision of her left eye, as we will not know the status of her sight for some time.”

After waking up from surgery, Lauren was able to speak to both the doctor and her family, being able to correctly identify herself when the doctor asked what her name was. When her mother and twin sister told her they loved her, she said, “I love you too.”

“I was inside, and someone came in and told me she had gotten hit. I was there until the care flight got there. I was just able to hold her and… that’s the toughest part of it all, just seeing her waiting there and waiting for the help. All I could do was tell her that I love her,” her mother said.

Her father told Good Morning America: “They’re telling us it’s going to be a long recovery. Obviously she’s had a lot of trauma to her head, and she lost her left hand and her left eye is questionable. We’re praying she’ll regain her sight. What she’d tell you is her relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important thing in her life. Even though she cannot talk I know she’s relying on Jesus right now.”

Her mother added, “Lauren is a go-getter, her progress has been phenomenal. She is going to fight and she will fight through this. She will make it through.”

Family friend Janee Harrell said, “They landed and Lauren was getting off the plane so they could pick up another passenger. It was dark… we are thinking that Lauren came back to thank the pilot, and didn’t see that the propeller was winding down.”

According to RadarOnline, Lynn Lunsford, Mid-States Public Affairs Manager with the Federal Aviation Administration, said the fact thar the propeller was still moving when Lauren got off the plane is key to the investigation. “It appears that the pilot left the engine running at idle while she exited the plane to switch places with another passenger. That’s one of the aspects of the investigation,” he said. Although the pilot has yet to be identified, he is believed to be a friend of Lauren’s who recently purchased the plane.

The pilot was definitely negligent here. Especially at night, he should *insisted* that the engine be off and prop stopped before allowing anyone in/out/near the plane. It is obviously all too easy for a lay person to make a tragic mistake in such a dangerous situation. Although the girl bears some blame for not being more wary around an active airplane (personally, I would have not gone anywhere near the front of it!) it was ultimately the pilot’s responsibility to take every action to *insure* safety… and he simply did not do that.

u ppl r horrible. she nearly died and u r actually making fun of her. i doubt that any of u wud have the strength to basically ‘walk off’ getting hit in the face with a spinning airplane propeller. and her career is partially relying on her good looks. she lost her freaking hand, imagine that happened to you. im prayin for her and wish her the best. her reaction to seeing herself after the incident is amazing and inspiring and tells alot about what kind of person she is. stay strong Lauren.

I agree with you, but you have to admit that this was her fault, and she was very stupid to ignore the safety briefs and walk in front of an aircraft with engines that were running. Defending her is fine, but do not get angry with people for expressing their opinions when it was her fault to begin with.

For you religious freaks saying karma will happen to the commenters, isn’t that a sin to wish bad upon someone? You need to go repent in your make-believe world! God doesn’t exist. Religious freaks might aswell believe in Santa too. LOL!

No one wants to point out that it wasn’t a plane ride with any purpose? Just to see Christmas lights? How much money did that cost over just driving to see the lights around town? How many lights could that money have bought poor families that won’t have Christmas spirit this year? I’m not saying she deserves it, but selfishness and a mentality that you can do what you want because you have the money for it doesn’t go unpunished. For her and the pilot.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. The pilot was a family friend, she didn’t pay to see the lights. I grew up with her, she doesn’t come from money and certainly isn’t a selfish. Get your facts straight next time so you don’t look like such an @ss

@oh boy – Actually, this IS the pilot’s fault, though both of them would share part of the blame. Any pilot of a prop plane, ESPECIALLY a small one should know to shut the prop of before allowing people to exit the plane. And, the model, having spent more than 5 minutes in the plane, should have realized how the thing worked and that it wasn’t powered by magic. So – as the judge of this imaginary case – I deem them both “retarded” and both equally at fault.

People I have worked around prop planes and at night you cannot see the prop spinning or hear the noise because there is just to much noise all around you. Yes, you must be careful but things happen and if you had any feelings you would understand that it’s not nice to be mean. There are only two emotion “LOVE” and “FEAR” and we know which ones of you choose fear. We all have a choice, I choose love, as above, so below, as within, so without. If you believe the stars are above you then you do not understand. We are all divine sparks of vibrating energy, it is what it is, I am what I am, I am present, I am now, I am the light. My thoughts of love go out to Lauren and her family she is just as much a part of you as she is to me and the universe.
