‘Giuliana Rancic is helping to take stigma away from the scary word mastectomy,’ says Dr. Cindy Bunin, Florida-based psychotherapist.

Dr. Cindy Bunin says she can relate to E!’s Giuliana Rancic and her tough decision to have a double mastectomy. She too was diagnosed with breast cancer while undergoing fertility treatments in her thirties.

“When I was 37-years-old, my doctor discovered a lump on my breast while I was getting fertility treatment. I ended up having a double mastectomy. I think Giuliana is making 100% the wisest decision,” Dr. Bunin tells us. “This is a very tumultuous time for her.  I strongly suggest that Giuliana see a therapist during this challenging time. I am a therapist and I went to see a therapist who was a cancer survivor. I wanted to see someone who understood what I was going through.”

Dr. Bunin says it’s normal to be scared about the side effects of undergoing such a seemingly traumatic surgery, however, these side effects far outweigh what could happen if she didn’t undergo the procedure.

“If Giuliana decides to undergo fertility treatment again, then she doesn’t have to worry about the hormone drugs,” she explains, adding, “Mastectomy is a scary word and Giuliana is a brave young woman to put a face to it and make people realize that is isn’t the end of the world. It’s important for young women to get mammograms regardless if they are getting fertility treatment or not.”

Our prayers and positive thoughts are with you, Giuliana. Thank you for sharing your challenges with us.
