Can you imagine anyone else playing Edward in the ‘Twilight’ saga? Neither can ‘New Moon’ director Chris Weitz!

Robert Pattinson did more than just memorize lines as Edward Cullen — he became one with the immortal vampire! HollywoodLife.com spoke with Rob’s personal friend and New Moon director Chris Weitz on Nov. 8 and he assured us Edward was not an easy character to play.

“Rob is playing a character whose key component is that he doesn’t change and he always loves Bella,” Chris said. “Now that’s a very difficult part to play. But Rob’s always tried to insert some nuance into it; for instance, an element of self loathing that he always wanted to put into the character of Edward that he hated himself for what he was doing.”

Chris told us Rob and Kristen did their best to “humanize” their characters and that Rob has matured greatly as an actor over the years.

“When always talking with him and with Kristen, we were taking these characters who were very iconic and trying to humanize them,” Chris recalled. “I think when working on Cosmopolis — a totally different filmmaker and a totally different genre — we’re really going to see something great.”
