When her apartment building caught fire and smoke started pouring in, this mom had no choice but save her kids by lowering them out of a third-floor window!
According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, 23-year-old Ashley Brown saved her 2-month-old son James and 3-year-old daughter Jayda by lowering them to safety to waiting neighbors below!
“I knew we couldn’t go out into the hallway,” Ashley told the news source. “I knew the baby’s lungs couldn’t take it.” She considered using a rope but it seemed to dangerous for the baby. She saw her neighbor Lawrence Fort hold out a “big fluffy black coat” and stretch his arms to catch the child, but she was scared.
“Some people were saying drop him,” she said. “And some people were saying don’t.” But Ashley knew she could trust him: “He looked at me, and I looked at him. I said ‘Please catch my baby.’ He said, ‘I promise I will,’ and he caught him.” She said tossing her child out of a window was the hardest thing she’s had to do in her life.
To lower her daughter, Ashley used the sturdy rope. Then Ashley helped her mother-in-law down to safety, and by then fire and rescue officials showed up.
“I’m guessing the whole ordeal lasted 10 or 15 minutes, but it felt like an eternity,” Ashley said. Luckily, nobody in the building was harmed in the destructive fire!
