Shut Up Johnny Depp: Being Photographed is NOT Like 'Being Raped!'

Tue, October 4, 2011 4:55pm EDT by 30 Comments

How dare you compare yourself to real rape victims in your new Vanity Fair cover story! Women who are raped suffer real terror, physical violence and injuries! You haven’t!

Johnny Depp – you have been a highly paid and catered-to celebrity for WAY too long! You are completely and utterly out of touch with the reality of the lives of real people, especially women. You had the nerve to say in your new Vanity Fair interview that being photographed is like “being raped.”

“You just feel like you’re being raped somehow,” you said. “Raped… it feels like kind of weird .. just weird, man.”

Weird, man?

Then you went on to say that you can’t stand photo shoots. “Whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like … you just feel dumb. It’s just so stupid,” you told Vanity Fair.

Guess what Johnny? The photo shoots aren’t stupid. You’re stupid for comparing yourself to a rape victim. Or maybe you’re just ignorant and haven’t stepped out of your gilded world in years to actually read a newspaper or watch a newscast about the Great Recession that your fellow Americans have been suffering through, or about the horrendous war in the Sudan where actual rapes are an epidemic.

The rape victim advocacy group RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) issued this exclusive statement to Hollywoodlife.com about your comments!

“While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape — a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help.”

Rape is an utterly horrific, degrading and demoralizing crime, which is often used as a weapon in wars around the world like Sudan, as I mentioned.

You are one of the highest paid actors in the world. Last year you earned $50 million primarily from your starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the huge hit movie franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean.

You live a life of privilege and power. You can buy anything you want. Your children want for nothing. You have the power to decide when you will work or what you will work on, unlike 99.999% of the people on this planet.

You have also NEVER been raped! I am sure that your words will offend any woman who has actually had the truly horrific experience of being raped. I’m sure any of them would change places with you and happily be photographed.

I doubt that they will sympathize with your whining and agree that having your photograph taken in a photo shoot, by a world renowned photographer (that’s who takes your picture) is like being sexually violated and injured.

Johnny Depp — it’s time for you to rejoin the “real” world and get over yourself now!

It really seems that he don’t care or know any thing about the real world life . After all that criticism  he will think more than hundred times before doing any interview. :)

This is all a missuse of words, I truely think he meant violated, it is a violation of your personal space and personal feelings that make you feel very uncomfortable. I don’t think he meant rape litterally.

Although he could have chosen words better, I don’t hate him. I am a huge fan and by now, people should know his words always get misqouted just to make this nice guy look like an a$$. People in this country are so sensetive and have turned into a bunch of puSSies. I don’t know if anyone has noticed but HE’S ONLY HUMAN! He’s not perfect and makes mistakes like the rest of us. Get over it and move on with your sad lives. He’s always been trashed in the media because he’s different no matter what he says or does. I admire him for going against the grain and not caring what people think of him. He does things HE wants and doesn’t look back. Do you think I give a crap about people who talk smack about me being in a wheelchair? No! I admit, it may hurt at first but then I move on with my life and don’t dwell on things. We have much more do deal with in our lives than something someone said or did. You can’t please everyone all the time.

F*ck the writer of this article. How dare you call Depp stupid. Why don’t you go back to writing about Bieber or Gomez or whoever. I don’t this is that big of a deal… it’s not like he actually believes it’s the same as being raped, he’s just saying the feeling is similar, of being exposed.

what if he said it was like date rape? that’s closer right? i mean you know this person so you should feel comfortable with them and then they do this terrible and violating thing that make you feel dirty and uncomfortable. and it may not even involve outright violence (no guns or beatings or anything) i would think it is more like that. you know what photos are and most of the times you are comfortable with them but then there is someone in your face when you are walking to your car taking your picture without your permission. makes you feel violated and uncomfortable. i can see a resemblance. it’s not as severe as a date rape but i can see why someone who deals with it would think that.

I’m pretty sure the “Pirates” movies wouldn’t have attracted the audience that they did without Depp.money he makes is nothing compared to what the studio makes off his movies.and you said the same thing about kristen stwart i mean some celebs hate having their pictures taken .

He is going down on a fast track. He has always downed america and people forgive him. He has defended child molestors people forgive him. He has followed the hanki code people dont mind. Took a teen to his trailer on the set people forgive him. Admits to drug use and drinking people forgive him. Compare photo shoots people will forgive him. Thinks making money is stupid and we pay for the tickets people forgive him. If he went with a horse or abused someone people would forgive him. He speaks with a british accent now people say oh how cute. No dear public he has gotten away with anything he wants too. Since he is so so rich and so A lister huh? More like a A hole on his way down.

Wow. I bet the hippies over at RAINN are so mad at Depp they could kill him. But then, the folks over at MAMMARY (Mothers Against Murder, Mayhem And Rice Yogurt) would probably sue them.

I agree, way out of proportion and over the top. Johnny just had a poor choice of “a word”. I can see why he hates interviews and such. Can you imagine, every second of every min. of every day guarding what you say and do? Much less being hounded by people screaming at you, or trying to get that certain picture. No wonder some famous people go into hiding, I couldn’t stand it. It goes with the big money, tho. So Johnny, if you ever want to get rid of any of that” stupid” big money, I could help you with that! ;)

I agree with Sherilynn, poor choice of words that’s it. I’ve been following his relentless work with the West Memphis 3, he kept it in the public domain and surely helped save a a life. I don’t like the paparazzi following Celebrities and their children to make a living. I think a little tap on the shoulder would have been a better way of handling his poor choice of words, looks like RAINN missed out on a perfect opportunity to bring attention to the “real problem” as that’s the kind of guy Depp is. I’m sure he meant no harm. #Farkoffparazzi

This has been blown way out of proportion – he was referring to the fact that when his privacy is invaded, it ‘feels like rape’. And paparazzi are always hounding him – recently, even his reunion with Vanessa and his children on their yacht was photographed – without their knowledge – and the pictures published online. I guess that IS a kind of rape – it’s an unwarranted, uninvited, offensive intrusion on a person’s private moments. Johnny must sometimes feel like he’s living in a goldfish bowl. So ease off – this hysterical reaction is totally over the top.

I don’t think it’s that serious.. And I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean to “offend” anyone- especially someone who has been a victim of rape. You’re acting like he raped YOU!! It’s just another one of those things that are taking out of context and people like to blow it way out of proportion. Relaxxxxxx

Ok first off you need to calm down. When I read this article all i hear in my head is some yelling voice. Yes he is aloud to say that. If people take your picture and publish it WITH OUT YOUR PERMISSION it is a form of rape. Second everyone knows how johnny is. He doesnt like things like this he likes to keep to himself to the invasion of privisy can be considerd rape. And last i know for a fact that everyone uses “rape” as daily slang so you need to stop blowing up things and being so over dramatic. MY gosh the guys is super talented and sweet and is an all around great person so shut up.
