Amber explains why she keeps getting back together with Gary during the ‘Teen Mom’ reunion special: ‘Five years, a baby, first love. It’s so much emotion!’
Teen Mom star Amber Portwood had a rough year dealing with her assault case then going through rehab after attempting suicide. But weeks before her suicide attempt, it seemed that she was trying to make her relationship work with Gary Shirley, the father of her 2-year-old daughter Leah. While filming the Teen Mom reunion special with Dr. Drew Pinsky around this time, though, Amber admitted that if she didn’t have Leah, she didn’t know if she would be with Gary at all!
“I think if we didn’t have Leah, we would not be together at all … not talking, nothing,” she said during the special, which aired Sept. 27. “Personally, I wouldn’t because a lot of things have hurt me. With a lot of guys who’ve [done] the same thing to me, I’ve said bye like that. It’s very easy for me to do that, but with Gary, it’s really hard. Every time I break up with this guy, it’s like I’m done, it’s over. [But] like a month later when we are done being pissed off and being free, it’s like he’s calling me. I’m calling him, ‘What are you doing? Oh, I love you.'”
Gary felt the same way. “It’s not like we want to be broken up,” he chirped in. “We want to be together happy without any problems.”
Amber also realized that she can’t predict the future of their relationship. “If it works out between us, then it works out,” she confessed. “It’s not right to plan anything because I’ve learned in my life that everything turns. Even if me and Gary are not together in the future, there’s no way in hell that me and you are never going to talk again and take care of each other if we need it. This is five years right here. Five years, a baby, first love. It’s so much emotion. I think we will be good one day.”
“From what she has told me, she has forgiven me for the things that I’ve done,” Gary added. “Not that it’s ever going to go away. So hopefully once we get rid of the instigators … I think the forgiveness has been there and has been said to us for everything, it’s just that it still hurts.”
Well Amber was right when she said she couldn’t predict the future. Today, Gary and Amber are no longer together — and Gary has even started dating other women!
